Rocket League somehow remains one of the most enduring esports, as Worlds 2023 has shattered all viewership records for the 2015 release.

When most gamers think of the esports industry, the big three of League of Legends, Counter-Strike, and Dota 2 usually come to mind. However, one particular game has been chugging along for years with a respectable base of both players and viewers. The Rocket League Championship Series just hosted its 2023 year-end tournament, and it boasted a peak viewership of well over 450,000 unique spectators.

This is a massive increase compared to previous years, with the 2022 edition of the event peaking at 368,721 according to Esports Charts. That makes 2023 Worlds the 16th most-watched stream in the history of Twitch. Its insane success is a testament to the longevity of Rocket League as both a casual game and spectator sport, but what has caused such a massive spike in interest?

Rocket League Worlds 2023 viewership shatters records, but why?

The insane viewership of 2023 Worlds was a combination of popular matchups, perfect timing, and a spike in interest from Rocket League players.

The competition itself is the easiest thing to point to. The grand final between Team Vitality and Team BDS was a long-awaited showdown between the two best teams in France, the strongest country in the game’s competitive scene. However, the absolute peak happened during the semifinal series between Karmine Corp and Team Vitality. That series featured stellar play from fan-favorite players Andrea “Radosin” Radovanović and Brice “ExoTiiK” Bigeard.

Another contributing factor is timing. This year’s RLCS took place between other major esports events, especially those at Riyadh Masters. The Saudi Street Fighter 6 event was the only real competition from an esports perspective. As both Dota 2 and League of Legends have yet to enter their championship season, 2023 Rocket League Worlds had an open field to reach a new viewership record.

And last but not least is the casual player base. Rocket League continues to be extremely popular with casual players, with ActivePlayer reporting more than 94 million active players across all platforms in the last month. The RLCS advertises major events in-game, further converting players to viewers. With nearly 100 million sets of eyes on the game, the game’s loyal fan base is often happy to support the pro scene.
