Tanks are making a huge comeback in the 2021 preseason so far, topping the charts for the highest win rates across solo queue.

The big item overhaul has brought a lot of love to the tank champions in League of Legends, maybe a bit too much. Tanks are currently sitting at the highest win rates in the game, and it’s mainly because of the new items.

Seven tank champions are currently sitting in the top 10 of the most winning champions from Platinum rank and above. This includes champions such as Amumu, Nunu & Willump, Malphite, Rammus, and others.

The reason why these champions are doing so well is because of the new items. Most of these champions are buying the new tank Mythic item Sunfire Aegis, which is a rework of the old Sunfire Cape. The item provides all the stats a tank would want, as well as a lot of potential damage.

The Immolate passive of Sunfire Aegis is what makes the item so hard for opponents to deal with. It gives the wearer AOE magic damage against enemies standing close by while also building up stacks that increase this damage even more. This AOE damage has shown to be very effective in the jungle, as well as when fighting other champions.

Champions such as Amumu and Nunu & Willump are currently topping the charts because they build a lot of tank stats while still being able to dish out a lot of damage from the jungle position. This has gotten them close to a 60% win rate in solo queue.

Amumu is the strongest champion in 2021 preseason

While there is plenty of viable tanks to picks in the current state of the preseason, Amumu is without comparison as the best option. The Sad Mummy is currently sitting at a 59.90% win rate in Platinum rank and above, which is an unusually high win rate for any champion in any meta.

As is the case with other top tank champions, the main reason why Amumu is doing so well is because of the new items. In the jungle, he utilizes the new Sunfire Aegis paired up with the Demonic Embrace. The two items give Amumu enough AOE damage that he clears jungle camps very quickly and deals a lot of damage to foes while remaining tanky.

Fnatic’s jungler Oskar “Selfmade” Boderek tried him out on stream recently and proved to the whole audience how overtuned the items currently are. The Polish jungler managed to solo the Baron at just 20 minutes, which is a big indicator that something is completely wrong.

He did this with the Sunfire Aegis, Demonic Embrace, and additional armor through his boots and some Cloth Armors. This clip is probably one of many instances where Amumus all over the world has been able to dominate Summoner’s Rift, and the items enabling this type of play are expected to be nerfed soon.
