New FromSoftware game could be coming soon, but what is it?

Elden Ring and Dark Souls developer FromSoftware might have a new game coming out in the very near future, according to Hidetaka Miyazaki. Or it might be another project entirely.

The FromSoftware president and Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring director sat down for a rare interview with 4Gamer. The Japanese outlet referenced a 2018 interview it conducted with Miyazaki during which he discussed two unpublished games that were in the works. One of them became Elden Ring, but the other remains a mystery four years later.

It might not be a mystery for much longer, however. According to Miyazaki the other game is now nearing completion. Miyazaki said “development is…in the final stages.” The big question now is what this new project actually is.

FromSoftware likely isn’t working on Bloodborne 2 or Elden Ring sequel yet

Fans shouldn’t expect that this unannounced project from FromSoftware is anything especially grand in scope. Though a Bloodborne 2 or Sekiro 2 could certainly be a smash hit, it’s almost impossible for FromSoftware to churn out two AAA titles in quick succession. And there’s even less chance of an Elden Ring sequel so soon after the launch of that game.

The studio hasn’t shown the capacity to push out games at such a quick clip. Though FromSoftware was previously capable of churning out up to six games per year, it has since become focused on making bigger and better games at a much slower pace. Counting Dark Souls 2, FromSoftware has released just seven games over the last eight years. Most of those games have been met with huge critical success, and have increasingly found commercial success as well.

This all culminated with Elden Ring, a game that became one of the best-reviewed titles in modern gaming and found tremendous sales success.

Is FromSoftware bringing Armored Core back?

Given the size and scope of Elden Ring, another similar effort is unlikely to release any time soon. That has fans wondering if FromSoftware might dig into its back catalog for something fresh.

Rumors have been swirling that FromSoftware is set to dust off its old IPs, most notably Armored Core. The last installment in the mech combat series came out in 2013 to mixed reviews. A sequel is a possibility, as is a remaster of older Armored Core games for modern consoles.

There are many games in FromSoftware’s back catalog that could also get this treatment. Otogi: Myth of Demons and Lost Kingdoms are two games that would be well-served by a slightly enhanced port.

There has also been persistent talk of Elden Ring DLC, though given that this latest project is one FromSoftware has been working on for several years, Elden Ring DLC is unlikely to be the answer for now.
