A report by Giant Freakin Robot revealed that HBO Max is currently working on the TV adaptation of Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy is proving to be a profitable product that Warner Bros may want to exploit for the foreseeable future. There are no details about the TV adaptation that is allegedly in development, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it gets the green light — especially considering that Hogwarts Legacy has sold 12 million copies worldwide.

The rumors come at a time when the future of the on-screen Wizarding World adaptations is uncertain. Warner Bros attempted to replicate the success of the original Harry Potter movies with the Fantastic Beasts franchise. According to some rumors, the studio released Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and waited for the numbers before ordering more movies. It’s been radio silence since the premiere of the third and possibly final movie in the franchise.

It’s to be expected for the studio to start looking at other stories within the Wizarding World. It was rumored that a movie adaptation of the theater success Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was in the works. Other rumors hinted at a TV reboot of Harry Potter.

Now Warner Bros might be working on these projects and Hogwarts Legacy at the same time.

What is the Hogwarts Legacy TV show about?

If the series ends up following the story of the game, we might have a student as the main character. Audiences seem to connect better with young students that are discovering the Wizarding World rather than a grown-up seasoned wizards. The story would take place in the 1800s, way before the events of the Fantastic Beasts franchise or Harry Potter.

This young character would be on a journey to stop the rebellion led by Goblins. A controversial plot, considering the antisemitic undertones of the story.

In the past, JK Rowling has been open about her transphobic and antisemitic stances. The author’s position ultimately led to a boycott of Hogwarts Legacy, which wasn’t as successful as activists expected. The game sold 12 million copies and remains one of the most-watched games on Twitch.

Regardless of the route HBO Max takes with the Hogwarts Legacy TV show, they can expect some negative reactions online.

Hogwarts Legacy TV Show release date

Making a TV show takes time. Unfortunately, just because it is “in development” doesn’t mean there is a script ready. In fact, “in development” is an umbrella term that could mean HBO Max is looking for a showrunner.

Considering the production cycle in HBO Max, the Hogwarts Legacy TV show won’t hit the screens for some time. The show needs to be written, cast, shot, and then comes the post-production. A TV show with magic requires a significant amount of special effects.

For comparison, HBO’s House of the Dragon premiere its first season in 2022 and won’t be back until 2024. Disney Plus’ Percy Jackson wrapped filming in January 2023 and is scheduled for 2024.

Even if HBO accelerated the process, a Hogwarts Legacy TV show won’t premiere until 2025.
