G2 Esports punched its ticket to the semifinals with a victory over Damwon Gaming in the 2019 League of Legends World Championship.

2019 Mid-Season Invitational champion G2 continues its glorious journey down the golden road. The LEC champion took down Damwon in a series that went to four games.

G2 recovered from its misstep in the group stage against Griffin. The European squad was decisive and disciplined on the rift. It was a much scarier look for a team that is known for its playful personalities and willingness to take risky plays just for entertainment purposes.

G2 handles Damwon with little trouble

Damwon and G2 put on a show for the audience at the Palacio Vistalegre in Madrid. Each of the games were intense and hotly competitive. Both teams focused on taking an early advantage and snowballing their way to victory off it.

The drafting from both teams was standard, except for a largely inconsequential Yorick pick in the top lane for G2.

The series came down to execution and decision making, with the ability to play the map being the deciding factor. Damwon might have dropped three games, but the team looked strong and found opportunities to punish G2.

In the end, G2 took the victory thanks to Rasmus “Caps” Winther on Yasuo. Game four between Damwon and G2 was arguably the best game of Worlds so far. Every time Caps cleared a wave, he took the opportunity to roam top and pressure Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon on Kayle.

G2 got five kills early, but closing the game was not as easy as G2 anticipated. In the mid game, G2 started to over-extend and felt too confident based on the gold lead they had amassed early.

It was time for Damwon to hit back and capitalize on G2’s cockiness. G2 was forced to slow down the pace of the game and Damwon saw the opportunity to close the gap.

Damwon started to scale and get items on their critical players but it was too little, too late. One team fight in the jungle sealed the fate of Damwon.

G2 slaughtered the enemies one by one and not even a miracle could save them. Damwon fought bravely until the last second of the game. The LCK representative watched from the death chamber as G2 killed their nexus and their dreams of making it to Paris.

With the win, G2 is facing SK Telecom T1 in the semifinals. The two teams have had a bit of a rivalry in 2019 based on their showdown at MSI. G2 toppled SKT in the semifinals 3-2, a loss that Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok has repeatedly discussed his desire to avenge.
