FaZe Clan triumphant at PUBG GLL Grand Slam, fend off Athletico

Last weekend the first GlobalLoot Grand Slam in PUBG: Classic took place and European FaZe team swept the competition for a lion’s share of the $300,000 prize pool and the title of back-to-back PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds champions.

PUBG currently has a year-long rotation in its competitive scene. Annually there are three regional phases ending in a Global Championship, as well as three independent PUBG: Classic competitions. GLL this year joined the lineup alongside FaceIT and MET Asia.

The 16 teams competing in Stockholm, Sweden represented the North American, Latin American, European, and Oceanic regions, with many of the teams using the event as an opportunity to make a name for themselves and their region on the international scene.

One of those standouts was Athletico, the breakout OCE team which swept the stakes to even make it to the Grand Finals and then put up a remarkable fight against FaZe before eventually placing second.

It was FaZe’s performance that was certainly the standout of the weekend, even prior to their final match consolidating their championship win. The top four teams were Natus Vincere, Atletico, FaZe, and G2, and the favorable plane path that let FaZe to their preferred looting zone of Mylta Power may have set the scene for their eventual victory.

The FaZe roster, consisting for the game of Anssi “mxey” Pekkonen, David “Fuzzface” Tillberg Persson, Ivan “ubah” Kapustin, and Ludvik “Aitzy” Jahnsen, all remained alive until the final minutes of the match. This meant that they were able to work together in supporting Ubah in landing the final four kills, and to watch Fuzzface trade him for the winning elimination onto Team Liquid’s Jere “Jembty” Kauppinen.

The event was a success for FaZe, but an even bigger accomplishment for GLL, who have been working to establish themselves as the leader in PUBG tournaments from the competitive scene’s infancy. This is also the first win in GLL in some time that hasn’t gone to a CIS team, which could point to progress in PUBG’s international competitiveness.
