DRX gets out-drafted by Unicorns of Love, stomps them anyway
DRX got out-drafted by Unicorns of Love, and still stomped their opponent in their first game of the 2020 League of Legends World Championship.
DRX had a convincing first game at Worlds 2020. The LCK squad took down UoL, one of the teams to watch from the play-ins. DRX decided to draft a classic DRX composition, ignoring some of the meta trends that developed in the play-ins. The downside of the draft was that Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu on Ashe ended up being the only source of damage. On the other hand, Unicorns of Love had good setup tools for ganks and multiple sources of damage.
Based solely on the compositions, UoL had the game on the bag. Of course, the LCL team didn’t anticipate that jungler Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon would have the debut of his dreams.
Worlds debutant Pyosik should not be underestimated
Heading into Worlds, there were some questions about Pyosik and how would he perform. The rookie jungler has been playing for less than a year at a professional level and didn’t have the best run in the LCK. Pyosik is considered a coinflip jungler that can either carry DRX or trip up the whole team.
In the match against UoL, the Pyosik coin landed on heads. Pyosik on Nidalee started the game by invading early and shutting down any early aggression by the enemy jungler. With support Ryu “Keria” Min-seok by his side, the jungler terrorized every enemy on the map. The support-jungle combo is an unexpected one, since both players were heavily criticized in the LCK for their performances throughout the regular season.
UoL didn’t go down without a fight. The team tried to make plays, but the setups ended up failing or were thwarted by Pyosik.
After this match, Pyosik is back in the conversation as one of the best junglers at Worlds 2020. The rookie finished its first game at Worlds with 13 kills and just one death.
DRX returns on October 5 to face Top Esports for a showdown that could determine the top team of its group.
