In Baldur’s Gate 3, players will find themselves wrapped up in a complex murder mystery during Act 3. The Open Hand Temple Murders involve the death of a beloved priest, Father Lorgan, and accusations against a refugee, Brilgor, who supposedly committed the crime. However, things are not as straightforward as they seem, and the real culprit is still on the loose. This guide will walk you through how to solve the Open Hand Temple Murders and uncover the true killer.

Starting Open Hand Temple Murders

Talking to Sister Yannis about Open Hand Temple murder

As you enter Act 3 in Baldur’s Gate 3 and reach Rivington, you’ll come across the Open Hand Temple. This is where you’ll find Father Lorgan has been murdered. Among the commotion outside the temple, and you’ll soon learn that a refugee named Brilgor is being blamed for the crime. However, when you speak to Sister Yannis inside the temple, she’ll hint that there’s more to the story. Offer to help solve the murder, and you’ll be pointed to various clues around the temple. You’ll also meet Valeria, a Hollyphant investigator, who believes Brilgor is guilty. However, as you dig deeper, you’ll find this isn’t the case.

Father Lorgan’s body and Brilgor’s Grave

The dead body of the first victim of the Open Hand Temple Murder, Father Lorgan

The first place to investigate the Open Hand Temple Murders is Father Lorgan’s body, which is located in a room on the south-western side of the temple. To gain more insights, use the Speak with the Dead ability to talk to Father Lorgan. He’ll reveal that Brilgor did not kill him, but instead, it was a “dwarf dressed in red.” This key piece of information will help clear Brilgor’s name.

Secondly, head outside the temple and into the graveyard. Here, you’ll find Brilgor’s grave. Dig it up Brilgor’s grave and use Speak with the Dead again to ask Brilgor about his involvement. He will confirm that he was not the killer, reinforcing that someone else is behind the crime.

The cellar and the key

The cellar under the temple

After speaking to the dead, return to the Open Hand Temple and head to the kitchen area. There, you’ll find a hatch leading to the cellar. Explore the cellar until you reach a large room with two statues and an altar. Look for interactable plaques near the statues—these will reveal buttons that open a hidden panel in the wall.

Prepare for combat, as you’ll face enemies beyond the panel. Defeat them, and you’ll discover more clues, including a Flower Key on one of the bodies and the murder weapon, “Stillmaker,” hidden in the ground near the platform. You’ll need a high perception to locate the weapon.

Now that you have the Flower Key, you’ll need to unlock a secret room in Fraygo’s Flophouse, located in Wyrm’s Crossing, past the South Span Checkpoint. Depending on your previous choices in the game, you may need to fight your way past the checkpoint or find an alternative route.

Once you reach Fraygo’s Flophouse, head upstairs to the attic. There, you’ll find a wardrobe that the Flower Key unlocks. Inside, you’ll discover a journal detailing the murders, revealing that they were carried out by a Bhaalist cult.

Reporting the Open Hand Temple Murders to Valeria

Talking to Investigator Valeria about the Open Hand Temple Murder

With proof of Brilgor’s innocence and evidence of a Bhaalist plot, head across the street to Sharess’ Caress, where you’ll find Valeria. Share your findings with her to complete this part of the quest. Valeria will then send you on a new mission where you’ll need to hunt down the serial killer.

Stopping the Serial Killer

Confronting the serial killer, Dolor, responsible for Open Hand Temple Murder and more

The serial killer, Dolor, is targeting specific victims in Baldur’s Gate, and you’ll need to track him down. Start by heading to Cora’s wine-tasting party, where Dolor will be disguised as one of the guests. After a brief confrontation, Dolor will flee to the Facemaker’s Boutique, where you’ll face him again. When you confront Dolor at the boutique, announce your presence to save the victim, Figaro Pennygood. After defeating Dolor, you can loot his body for valuable items and confirm that Figaro is safe.

Solving the Open Hand Temple Murders in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a multi-step process that involves speaking to the dead, exploring hidden areas, and confronting a serial killer. By following these steps, you’ll uncover the truth behind Father Lorgan’s death, clear Brilgor’s name, and put a stop to the Bhaalist cult’s murderous rampage.
