New York state representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised $200,000 by playing Among Us on Twitch earlier this week. The impressive fundraising effort went towards eviction defense, food pantries, and other support aimed at communities.

“We did it! This is going to make such a difference for those who need it most right now,” AOC said.

We did it!

$200k raised in one livestream (on a whim!) for eviction defense, food pantries, and more.

This is going to make such a difference for those who need it most right now.

Thank you all ???????? https://t.co/KX5m5GXJ9B

Who is AOC streaming with?

This time around, AOC streamed with leader of the Canadian New Democratic Party and MP Jagmeet Singh as well as a handful of popular streamers. This included xQc, DisguisedToast, Hasanbi, and Corpse Husband.

“So many people are having a hard time in this crisis,” AOC tweeted before the beginning of the Among Us stream.

Highlights from AOC Among Us stream on Twitch

It’s not every day that gamers see a high profile politician take part in a game of Among Us. For many Americans, watching AOC’s streams have been a way to feel more connected to the representative.

While AOC usually has a lot of composure while speaking on important political topics, Ocasio-Cortez got real and relatable during an Emergency Meeting with the other competing streamers. When she was accused (correctly) of killing one of the other members of the crew, AOC started to panic.

“No! No! I found the body right as I was walking up. I did not kill! I did not kill them!” AOC exclaimed, slamming the desk as she stood up for herself.

Viewers loved seeing her get so into the game. Some joked that they expected a politician to be able to lie a bit more convincingly.

Another fun moment came when the other streamers started asking AOC about her experiences playing League of Legends. In the past, AOC had joked that dealing with toxic players in League of Legends helped her deal with internet trolls

This time, AOC talked a bit more about her playstyle. While waiting for a match to begin, AOC stated that she plays support champions like Morgana and Sona. But sometimes she gets a bit in trouble for playing defensive champions a little too aggressively.

Another streamer asked her if dealing with in-game chat helped her in congress.

“Getting caught in elo hell really requires so much patience. You’re playing with 12-year-olds that are rage quitting five minutes into a game. It really builds your patience,” AOC responded.

“I’m grateful to all who joined us,” AOC said after the Among Us stream ended. “It was wonderful learning from you Jagmeet Singh. Thank you for reminding us that another world is not only possible but just a few hours’ drive from NYC.”
