God of War Ragnarok will introduce even more gods into Kratos and Atreus’ journey.

Part of the fun of every new God of War is seeing what new deities join the franchise. The switch to Norse mythology opens up a ton of options and developer Santa Monica Studio has already confirmed multiple gods appearing in the next game. Of course, Kratos and Atreus are a given.

The following gods have been confirmed for God of Ragnarok through promotional material and trailers:

  • Odin
  • Thor
  • Tyr

Thor

Thor was the first new god confirmed for God of War Ragnarok. His massive build and intimidating weapon make him an obvious adversary for Kratos, a conflict that could change the series forever. Thor actually appeared in the first game in a secret post-credits cutscene. However, the brief glimpse showed off Mjollnir more than the thunder god himself.

Tyr

Tyr, the Norse god of war, was later shown in the official story trailer. The lanky Norse native appears to become an ally after the protagonist duo frees him from Odin’s imprisonment. Tyr was mentioned several times in the first game as a peaceful traveler who could unite the realms together. As a fellow god of war, Tyr also raises some questions about Kratos’ role outside of Greece.

Odin

Lastly, the granddaddy of all Norse mythology Odin is confirmed for God of War Ragnarok. Just his silhouette in the trailers is enough to create a deadly atmosphere, and his quiet voice contrasts with all of the terrible acts the story has pinned on him. As the progenitor of Magni, Modi, Thor, Baldur, and Tyr, Odin will enter the sequel with an already-massive web of relationships.

In addition to the new gods confirmed in promotional material, trailers also verify several returning characters from the first game.

The biggest change is for Freya, who started as a reluctant ally but has now turned into a major recurring villain. A trailer clip shows her nearly slashing Atreus, but instead letting him live and only taking the same mistletoe that ultimately killed her son Baldur.

Modi survived the battle against Kratos and Atreus in the first game, and then While he does not yet appear in any promotional material, he could very well become a rival for Atreus as Thor and Kratos duke it out. Brok and Sindri do make appearances in the trailers, and they will likely stick around for a future third game.

In addition to named gods, trailers also show off a bunch of new mystical creatures including colorful mermaids, giant wolves, and a humongous floating jellyfish. Based on the end of the first God of War reboot, it’s also possible that unexpected gods will join the later parts of the story.
