Is Secret Invasion the worst TV show in the MCU? The show has received a wave of negative reviews that might not be as accurate as people expect.

Secret Invasion is the latest miniseries released on Disney+ as part of the MCU’s Phase Five. The show follows Nick Fury after he returns to Earth to deal with a group of radicalized Skrulls. The group is set on enhancing their physical powers and ridding the planet of humans, guaranteeing a safe home for their species.

The star-studded cast includes Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury, Olivia Colman (The Crown), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Barbie). Cobie Smulders returns as Agent Maria Hill, and Don Cheadle as Rhodey.

Why is Secret Invasion so bad?

Secret Invasion currently sits on a 52% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, but is it really that bad?

The short answer is no, it’s not as bad as people are making it out to be. Secret Invasion suffers from the same evil as the rest of the MCU. The universe got too big too fast and is starting to feel irrelevant.

Secret Invasion has good writing, touching on themes such as family and how duty makes us put one’s needs on the back burner. The acting is impeccable, with a good balance of action, comedy, and drama. However, it all feels kind of pointless in the grand scheme of things.

The absence of any of the major characters in the MCU, which the show explains a few episodes in, makes Secret Invasion feel disconnected. There is a significant character death that is swept under the rug quickly.

As part of Phase Five, Secret Invasion’s contribution to the storyline seems to be nonexistent. Of course, this could change once The Marvels comes out, a story that heavily features Nick Fury.

Secret Invasion is a good show if you approach it as its own thing, separated from the MCU. A closer look into Nick Fury’s story and how all of the mistakes from his past are finally catching up to him.

From this point forward, this article will contain spoilers about Secret Invasion.

One of the biggest pieces of criticism is the fact that Emilia Clarke’s character G’iah is now the strongest character in the MCU. Because of genetic experimentation, G’iah gains the ability to use all of the Avenger’s powers. This leads to a final fight against Gravik (Ben-Adir), in which they both showcase different abilities. This is only possible because Nick Fury surrenders a sample of all of the Avenger’s DNA in exchange for Gravik’s departure from Earth. G’iah wins the fight, killing Gravik.

Some fans were extremely mad at this development in the MCU, but sadly, it’s nothing new. In the past, the Scarlet Witch was deemed the strongest character in the MCU followed by Captain Marvel and Thanos in third place. This ranking has been rejected by sectors of the fandom, mostly male, without any real reason.

In the final episode, G’iah is recruited by Sonya Falsworth (Colman), a high-ranking MI6 agent who’s been helping Fury throughout the show. G’iah and Falsworth strike a deal where Falsworth gets to use the Skrull forces in exchange for safe haven on Earth.

We’re left to see what will the MCU do with G’iah as a character. So far, Clarke is not listed in any of the upcoming MCU projects.

All six episodes of Secret Invasion are available now on Disney+.
