LEC cancels 2020 Summer playoffs in Sweden, opens Berlin studio

The LEC has decided to cancel the 2020 LEC Summer Split finals event in Malmö, Sweden due to the ongoing global health situation.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our plans to host the Summer Finals in Malmö, Sweden. We’re currently exploring other options for the event,” director of esports at Riot Alberto “Tiroless” Guerrero said.

This is a last-minute change for the league that as recently as April still indicated an intention to follow through with its plans to host the LEC playoffs live in Sweden. At the time, the LEC said that it was preparing a smaller event if the Sweden event had to be canceled.

It's not all bad news for the league, as the LEC shared its plans to resume production at the LEC Studio in Berlin.

Starting on June 12, the LEC will operate from its Berlin studio with a skeleton crew. All teams will continue to play from their respective team facilities. The LEC will still be played online for the foreseeable future. The goal is to get the players and members of the press back in the studio before the end of the Summer Split. The LEC clarified that there are still no plans to open the studio to fans anytime soon.

New schedule for pro League of Legends in the summer

Starting with this summer split, there will be more competitive League of Legends to follow online. Both the LEC and LCS will have three days of weekly broadcasts this season. A regular season weekend schedule will start on Friday around 11 AM CST with five matches from the LEC. Later in the day, the Friday Night League broadcast will feature two LCS matches.

On Saturday, the day starts at 10 AM with five more games in the LEC. The LCS will follow immediately with four matches starting at 3 PM CST. On Sunday, the day will follow the same schedule as on Saturday. It means that there will be a total of 25 matches every week of the regular season this summer, giving fans plenty of action to follow.
