League of Legends players are upset with lack of shorter game modes

League of Legends games aren’t short, as is the case with many esports titles, and casual players don’t necessarily like having to queue for long matches all the time.

While League used to offer different game modes designed for those who want to jump in for a quick play, both the Crystal Scar and Twisted Treeline, two maps that offered quicker games, are now gone. For players that don’t feel like putting their time and effort into the Summoner’s Rift matches that often last more than half an hour even after a queue and draft, the only option left is ARAM, with occasional limited game modes such as Poro King or All Random Ultra Rapid Fire.

But ARAM has a big downside to it with players not being able to choose the champions they want to play. So if they wish to play a quick game of League with a specific champion picked, those options are gone. And now players have started actively complaining about it.

Why aren’t Dota 2 and CSGO players complaining about game time?

League’s game time isn’t that different compared to other popular multiplayer titles, including Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. In fact, both of these two competitive titles have an average match length of around 45 minutes, which is as long as a game of League takes if the draft phase is taken into account. So why is it that it’s mostly League fans complaining?

What League once had and now lacks, while the two other games offer, are simple fast-paced game modes. Just as CSGO has 10-minute long deathmatch mode and Dota 2 halves its game time with Turbo, League used to offer Dominion and Twisted Treeline modes for quicker games.

Neither one of those modes is now available, leaving League fans frustrated with a lack of options as each normal game asks them to devote over half an hour of their time, with no other options available.

However, Riot Games’ decision to shut down shorter game modes comes as a benefit to those that prefer the standard one, which is the majority of players. It better centralizes the League of Legends player base in Summoner’s Rift and ARAM, and ensures that developers are able to fully focus on the most popular modes of play.

It should be expected that Summoner’s Rift, as League’s main map, takes most of the glory. Especially as Riot Games continues to see such great success with what may be the most popular title in esports today.
