It’s official. League of Legends developer Riot Games is creating a fighting game.
Evo founder and Riot employee Tom Cannon confirmed the game’s existence on the first day of Evo 2019 during a live talk show.
"Back in 2016 when we joined forces with Riot I said that we were going to go in the hole for a while,” Cannon said. “I want to be able to let people in on maybe the worst kept secret in the universe, which is that I can confirm we are working on a fighting game for Riot.”
No other information on the game was given. It is uncertain whether the fighter will be a spin-off to League of Legends or if it will be its own original IP. Regardless, this is just the third game developed by Riot following LoL and board game Mechs vs. Minions.
When will Riot's fighting game come out?
Brothers Tom and Tony Cannon joined Riot Games in 2016 when their company Radiant Entertainment was purchased by the studio. At the time, Radiant Entertainment was creating a free-to-play fighting game called Rising Thunder. The project was cancelled following the business' purchase but the Cannon brothers hinted that the game’s development team wasn’t quite done yet.
“[The Rising Thunder] team will start work on a new game that we’re incredibly excited about. We wish we could say more now, but rest assured you’ll hear more when the time is right,” Tom and Tony said.
The time has come at last and now the universe’s “worst kept secret” has been revealed. However, Tom Cannon warns not to expect to see the project any time soon.
"I'm not here to say the game is coming out any time soon, but we do feel like we're making progress," Cannon said.
League of Legends fans don’t have much information to chew on, but it is finally safe to start feeling hype for the game.
