League of Legends legacy cursor disappears and returns in one day
Riot Games removed the legacy cursor from League of Legends only to return it to live servers within the span of a day following a community backlash.
The legacy cursor was unexpectedly erased on July 30. The removal was intended as a minor interface tweak, but it spawned an unexpected amount of outrage from fans and players alike. Many players were not ready to part ways with one of the last remnants of the old Summoner’s Rift design and they made their frustration heard. Only a few hours later, Mark “Riot Scruffy” Yetter announced that the legacy cursor would be returning once Patch 9.15 hit live servers.
The cursor returned the very next day, true to Scruffy’s word. However, the Riot Games employee also implied that the old cursor’s days may still be numbered.
“We'd still like to clean up this old setting someday, but enough players have expressed their preference for the old one that we want to respect that,” Scruffy said.
The legacy cursor was gone and back again so swiftly that if a player missed a day of play they wouldn't have noticed the removal ever occurred.
The original cursor was replaced during the launch of Patch 8.14. A newly crafted cursor was added to the game to match the redesign of Summoner’s Rift. The legacy cursor was still accessible through the interface options menu.
This option was nowhere to be found when players logged in on July 30.
The removal of this option was met with immediate backlash. Many frustrated players questioned the developer’s reasoning for the cursor’s permanent replacement. Others mourned the loss of their preferred cursor.
One grief-stricken fan on Reddit went so far as to tattoo the old cursor design onto his leg in memoriam. The cursor returned to live servers a day later, but the tattoo won’t be reversed quite so easily.
