Chovy hints at a surprising role swap coming to DragonX

DragonX mid laner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon recently hinted the possibility of a surprising role swap in the spring.

DragonX, previously known as Kingzone DragonX, is taking a page out of G2 Esports’ book and is experimenting with a role swap. In a recent interview with Korean website Daily Esports, Chovy revealed that the team could go for the swap in the first game of the 2020 LCK Spring season.

“For the first game, I could play ADC while Deft goes top. During our practice matches, Deft displayed a lot of amazing plays on Irelia, so we might see position changes that previously we could have never imagined,” Chovy said.

Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu is considered one of the best players in the LCK, and arguably the best bottom laner in the league. Deft made his debut in Korea and played for one year before going to China to join Edward Gaming. During his time with EDG, Deft became a reference point for other bottom laners in the region and earned the love of many thousands of fans. In 2016, after two years in China, Deft returned to Korea with a newfound respect attached to his name.

Deft and Chovy consider swapping roles in LCK

In 2019, Deft with his duo Park “TusiN” Jong-ik became the core of the team. The bottom lane duo almost singlehandedly carried the team through the season. It still wasn’t enough to win a title or make it to the World Championship.

DragonX released its roster and decided to build a new team around Deft with input from coach Kim “cvMax” Dae-ho. cvMax is known for his experiments on the rift and for giving rookie players a chance to prove their worth. The head coach is trusting on rookie jungler Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon who was recruited off solo queue.

The rookie players and unorthodox drafts are not the only innovations that cvMax is bringing to DragonX. Chovy’s statement is proof that the team is attempting to do what no other LCK team has yet done. If Deft can translate his dominance in the bottom lane to the top lane, DragonX might just have hit the jackpot.

In the LEC, G2 proved that successful role swaps can be a key to international success. The team turned one of the best mid laners in Europe into one of the best bottom laners in the world. In 2020, G2 wants to take the experiment one step further and made Rasmus “Caps” Winther and Luka “Perkz” Perković swap roles again.

DragonX will debut on February 7 against Deft’s former team, KT Rolster.
