WePlay! Esports has announced its first Dota Underlords open tournament.

The WePlay! Dota Underlords Open tournament will have a prize pool of $15,000 for which the players will compete in a round robin format. Open qualifiers will be hosted in Europe and North America starting July 27, while the main event will begin on August 1.

Each round players will be split into groups of eight, and the top four players with the highest points in the round will advance to the next. Eight players from each region that move through the open qualifiers will proceed to the main tournament.

Eugene Luchianenco, head of esports at WePlay!, said that the organizer wishes to position itself on the front line of the auto battler genre’s growing competitive scene. This is the company’s first take on the genre.

WePlay! is jumping in on a new trend. The auto battler genre has been on the rise with a number of prominent game developers releasing games of this type. Dota 2 mod maker Drodo’s Auto Chess, Valve’s Dota Underlords, Riot Games’ Teamfight Tactics, and Tencent’s Chess Rush are all examples of auto battlers.

Many other event organizers have taken on the challenge of building the auto battler competitive scene.

Riot Games will hold the first official Teamfight Tactics tournament from July 17 as a celebration of the game mode’s ranked play option going live. Riot invited 64 streamers and split them into two groups to fight for a $125,000 prize pool. Sixteen top players will compete for the title of TFT Twitch Rivals champion.

ESL One Hamburg will host a Dota Underlords event in October 2019. The offline tournament will be free to join for the live event attendees and will have a €5,000 prize pool.

Popular Twitch streamer Imane “Pokimane” Anys hosted a Teamfight Tactics tournament on July 4. The tournament offered a $15,000 prize pool and was joined by many streamers and competitive players.
