Fans Are Speculating Whether Rockstar Will Kill Either Jason or Lucia in GTA 6

Rockstar Games has a history of killing off key characters, and fans are speculating whether either Jason Duval or Lucia Caminos will meet their demise in GTA 6.
Multiple playable characters aren’t something new for Rockstar, as GTA has had this mechanic since many of its early games. GTA V, however, changed things completely by introducing three switchable characters, each with distinct personalities and backstories. This is why fans were excited when it was confirmed that GTA 6 would feature two protagonists, who would also be a couple. However, just two weeks before the game’s release, there is speculation and fan theories about whether Jason or Lucia could die in GTA 6.
Rockstar’s history suggests that either Jason or Lucia could die in GTA 6
GTA V is the most appropriate example for GTA 6’s potentially leaving players with one of the protagonists dead. The Rockstar title gave players the choice to either have Trevor die, Michael die, or ensure all three protagonists survive. GTA 6 could offer a similar choice, and the decision would be even more personal, as Jason and Lucia are involved romantically.

Other Rockstar titles such as Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 also involved the protagonists dying. However, unlike GTA V, these two games didn’t offer players a choice. Red Dead Redemption saw John being killed at the end of the main story, and Rockstar used an epilogue where players could continue as his son, Jack. RDR2 also ended with Arthur dying, and the epilogue shifts to Red Dead Redemption’s John becoming the playable character as a younger man.
GTA 6’s official story and trailers have highlighted that both Jason and Lucia have been involved in criminal activities for some time, with the odds stacked against them. The trailer also showed Jason in full tactical gear and Lucia wearing an ankle monitor, highlighting how risky things could be. These don’t prove that either of the protagonists could die. However, it wouldn’t be past Rockstar to make two characters become favorites and then kill them off for an emotional ending.
Polymarket traders think Jason or Lucia will die in GTA 6
Video game prediction markets are one of the best mediums to take the temperature of fans’ sentiment on the upcoming game’s ending. Polymarket is offering a popular market with two contracts being up for purchase: Yes and No. Traders are purchasing the contracts based on their belief about whether either Jason or Lucia will have a canonical death in GTA 6’s story mode. There is a 48% implied probability of a Yes outcome at the time of this writing. This means that fans are divided currently, though the market does not specify which character will meet an early end.

This isn’t a guarantee, and GTA 6 could very likely end with both protagonists safe at the end of the story mode. However, if Rockstar could kill off either Jason or Lucia during the epilogue, then the Polymarket would still resolve with a Yes, with the epilogue missions also counting as part of the official story mode.

☑️ My view: GTA 6 may need one protagonist to survive
If Rockstar is planning anything similar to GTA V, then players may get the option to choose who survives out of Jason and Lucia. This could be crucial, as Rockstar’s epilogue requires a playable character for post-story content. Dan Houser has talked about how he wanted to kill Niko in GTA IV, but that would leave players without a plausible character to explore the open world after the credits.
If the developer gives the option to kill both protagonists, then it may introduce a new character. This would be similar to the RDR titles, as both games saw the main protagonist die, and another taking their place. Houser also talked about how he took the risk with RDR, introducing a new character to explore the world after the game ended. All will be revealed soon, and we will get an answer for how the GTA 6 story ends.
