Will Half-Life 3 be released this year? Prediction markets are split

Half-Life 3 is one of the true unicorns of gaming, a sequel that could revolutionize the industry, conclude a decades-long narrative, and finally quash the slander that developer Valve can’t count to three. And yet there’s no official signs that the game is on the horizon.
But with rumors swirling, teases and activity extracted by data miners, and Valve characteristically silent on all fronts, why do 24% of predictors on Kalshi think we could see Half-Life 3 release in 2026? Lets dive into all the factors and considerations that have a quarter of predictors thinking HL3 could drop this year.

Why do people think Half-Life 3 could release in 2026
To be clear, there’s absolutely no solid, 100% conclusive evidence that Half-Life 3 will drop in 2026, but there’s plenty of hints it could be on the horizon. Lets bullet out the three main avenues that are pointing to it:
- Valve’s new hardware releases.
- HLX and the hints dropped in Half-Life: Alyx.
- Datamined info across multiple Valve projects and games.
The most compelling factor is definitely Valve’s recent slate of hardware releases. The new Steam Controller, which was released and sold out earlier in May, and the upcoming Steam Machine.
It’s been speculated since late 2025 that Half-Life 3 could be a launch title for the Steam Machine, due to the timing of the machine’s announcement in conjunction with an uptick in HLX activity.
HLX is an internal code for Valve, which has been known to be associated with an upcoming Half-Life game for the past few years. And since at least October last year, references to the game have been seen by Dataminers across Steam, Valve’s gaming platform, and within Valve’s other game projects, such as Deadlock and Dota 2.

Beyond this, Half-Life: Alyx, the VR-focused previous entry in the Half-Life series ended on a cliff hanger which essentially set up for a Half-Life 3, or at least a sequel/finale for the series. Alex released in March 2020, and during development, it was speculated that this title could be related to HL3.
However, with the HLX project code still appearing in leaks over six years after the release of Half-Life: Alyx, it seems highly likely a Half-Life 3 is in development. With seemingly half a decade of development behind it, 2026 seems like a reasonable enough release date for Half-Life 3.
Will Half-Life 3 release in 2026? 25% of Kalshi predictors say “Yes”
Turning to the prediction markets, and Kalshi is currently running a year-long market for “Which video games will release this year?”
Half-Life 3 is the second largest sub-market within this, after confirmed 2026 release Squadron 42, and ahead of Stardew Valley creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone’s next game, Haunted Chocolatier.

At the time of writing 24% of predictors were saying “Yes,” to a 2026 Half-Life 3 release. The Yes position currently sells for a relatively affordable $0.28 a share. If the market resolves to yes, which will happen only if Half-Life 3 is fully released before Jan 1, 2027 on any platform in the United States, predictors could pocket a chunk of a $10,000+ market.
While Valve is one of the most mysterious major video game companies around, predictors enamoured with the idea that the company could once again shadow drop a huge title, as they’ve done in the past with many games.
