Why are ranged top laners so common in League of Legends?

In League of Legends Season 2026, top lane has been filled with ranged champions. Outside of the usual few, marksmen and even control mages have found a new home in top. This change in meta is much to the displeasure of players who prefer facing tanks and bruisers. Why did ranged top laners become so frequent and how does one beat them?
The ranged top laners in League of Legends
LoL has always had a few ranged characters made for that lane. Namely, Kennen, Jayce, Gnar, Teemo, Vladimir, and Quinn. Short-range mages occasionally find their place there.
In 2026, though, pro players started regularly picking Vayne, Varus, and Anivia top lane. As always, this put the spotlight on these champions, and the entire playerbase would soon follow through with those picks.
There has been a higher diversity of ranged top laners in the past. What’s remarkable in 2026 is their popularity as well as their level of power.
Why are ranged top laners so common in 2026 in League of Legends?
These picks didn’t appear randomly. In 2026, Riot made two consecutive changes: one made those picks stronger, then the other unlocked them for pro play.
At the end of 2025, Riot nerfed both Doran’s Shield and Second Wind. The intent of these nerfs was to reduce the power of melee mid laners and to allow mages to properly poke them in lane.
However, one aspect of League’s design is that if ranged champions can go head-to-head with melee ones in mid, they’re able to bully them in top. For melees to comfortably withstand ranged top laners, they must also be able to dominate mid lane.
This leaves Riot in an impasse that they haven’t found a way out of yet. Most mid laners want to play mages, and most top laners want to play bruisers or tanks. One of the two groups will necessarily be on the receiving end of the choice.
Then, at the start of 2026, Riot introduced role quests, which disabled lane swaps. Lane swaps were what prevented marksmen and mages from functioning as top laners in pro play. With them gone, those picks gained free access over top. And with pro players putting them in the spotlight, the whole playerbase followed suit.

How to beat ranged top laners in LoL?
The first answer to ranged top laners will always be ganks. Those picks are naturally more vulnerable than melees, and once they fall behind, they will keep dying repeatedly. Choosing a laner that can facilitate those ganks also helps. Making sure to hold the wave near the tower whenever possible is also vital, to threaten jungle intervention and gain access to the bushes.
With counterpick, the second answer to beat ranged top laners in LoL is another ranged pick. Only this time, one meant to beat the other champion rather than one meant to go top lane. For example, Kog’Maw can beat Teemo or Kennen in the top lane, and Sivir can face Anivia.
Lastly, an option available to all champions is to switch to more aggressive runes. Rather than the likes of Grasp or Conqueror, Stormraider’s Surge and Hail of Blades paired with Nimbus Cloak are excellent to put down ranged opponents. As they have fewer defensive tools, bruisers and even tanks gain the ability to run them down with that setup.
