Casino Streaming explained

There are multiple categories that streamers create content for, and casino streaming has quickly become one of the most popular, not to mention lucrative. But what exactly is casino streaming, and what has contributed to its sharp rise in popularity?

Content creators stream a wide variety of materials online that resonate with their audiences and the things they love. Casino streaming is another such niche through which streamers and creators stream themselves taking part in betting and gambling activities, and viewers tune in to watch the wins, losses, and surprises in real-time. This allows the audience to immerse themselves in casino gameplay without actually having a financial stake in the game itself.

While casino streaming may seem straightforward, there is certainly some nuance in how it actually works and what about it appeals to its many fans.

Casino streaming explained

Casino streaming involves content creators streaming themselves playing games at online casinos. The list of games played includes quite some variety, ranging from traditional experiences in blackjack, roulette, and poker, to new experiences that can only be had online, as is the case with many modern online slots.

While streamers do play to win, the objective of the stream itself is to better entertain the audience with the various moves they make, the bets they put forward, and their quest for a lucky hit. Streamers don’t always win, as losing is just part of the game when betting in any casino game. But even the losses can be fun and entertaining when you’re watching someone else absorb them, and that’s the case with casino streaming.

As for where casino streaming takes place, that depends on the individual streamer, their goals, and the audience they want to reach. The best casino streaming platforms offer environments through which content creators are able to be discovered by new audience members and potential followers, and can stream a variety of casino games while remaining within the platform’s terms and guidelines. Kick and YouTube stand out as being among the best options for casino streamers, and the top Kick streamers for slots and casino games boast massive followings.

roulette online casino streaming

Casino streaming tends to be highly interactive, with streamers talking to followers in their chat channels, and that increases the audience’s immersion because they know why the streamer is making a particular move, how they’re planning to win, and how they feel whether they hit a jackpot or come up empty.

How casino streaming works

Casino streaming works for both content creators and audience members, as it’s a potentially lucrative opportunity for the streamer, and a way for the audience to take part in the action without the possibility of taking a loss.

The main benefit for the casino streaming audience is that they get the thrill of gambling and the excitement of big wins when the hits arrive, but the losses don’t carry the same repercussions as when audience members are themselves placing the bets. They get to live through the experience of the streamer, just the same as viewers do in other streaming niches and categories.

For the content creator, how casino streamers make money is a big part of the math behind the decision to get into casino streaming. Taking part in livestreaming already offers a variety of ways to make money, whether it’s through follows committing a paid subscription to a channel, donating to a streamer, or that streamer involving advertisements in their broadcasts. But beyond that, many of the most popular streamers in the casino category have earned themselves partnerships with the biggest and best online betting sites.

Online slots are often a big part of casino streaming.

These partnerships earn money for casino streamers through a variety of means, including flat fees paid for advertising a particular operator and affiliate fees paid out when new bettors choose to play with an online casino the streamer is supported by.

As mentioned, it’s also important for casino streamers to decide which platform to broadcast their gameplay on. Kick generally has the greatest allowances for casino streaming, as it’s a fundamental part of the Stake-backed platform.

It’s also important for casino streamers to decide which types of games they most want to play. While the biggest and best casino streamers have such large followings that they’re able to play a variety of games and maintain audience interest, content creators who are still working their way up typically need to focus on one particular area, such as slots or blackjack. This makes it easier for them to develop a reliable fan following and the viewership that comes with it.

The rise of casino streaming

Casino streaming really started in earnest as early as 2015 on livestreaming platforms such as Twitch. Initially, streamers affiliated with casinos were the main draw, and many alleged that the platforms were abusing Twitch to make money. Gradually, things began shifting, with game providers joining the trend, and by 2018, slot streaming became a trending category on Twitch. Bitcoin casinos also became closely involved with streaming platforms, with their forward-thinking audiences appreciating the thrills.

Viewership for online content was at a peak in 2020, and casino streaming was trending, but things changed when Twitch began its crackdown on gambling content in 2022. This affected viewers and streamers, but fans found an alternative in Kick, which launched around the same time.

Kick offered creators more freedom and quickly became one of the best platforms for casino streaming. The livestreaming platform is backed by crypto casino Stake and has signed popular streamers for massive amounts of money. Some streamers, such as Felix “xQc” Lengyel, have reportedly earned upwards of $100 million by joining Kick and doing gambling streams.

The slots category is still one of the most-watched and highest-paying on Kick, displaying a growing gambling streaming trend.

Criticisms of casino streaming

But all this success isn’t without its drawbacks, as some have criticized gambling sponsorship as well as other closely-linked issues  — and we will look into these issues now.

Fake money and streamer bonuses

When casino streaming initially started gaining traction, some platforms gave streamers huge balances that could be used to gamble, but the money couldn’t be withdrawn. This, of course, caused issues around realism, with streamers clearly being less risk-averse when not using their own funds.

This practice seems to have dissipated somewhat, with stream viewers now more aware of what they are watching and demanding real money balances be used. Despite this, critics argue that casinos still fund gambling streams, and allege that many streamers don’t use real balances, which would explain why there are regularly multi-million dollar payouts.

They claim that streamers play with promotional funds that can’t be withdrawn. There have been some instances where well-known casino streamers have slipped and displayed that they are playing demo mode, which has been used as evidence for arguing that streamers won’t risk their own money. One of the top casino streamers, Ishmael ”Roshtein” Swartz, is one example of a content creator who was accused of using fake money after he apparently displayed demo mode in a stream.

While the argument is that many streamers are playing with fake money, even the critics don’t claim that every casino streamer is fooling their audiences. It’s hard to gauge if a streamer is really using promotional balance, which is why critics can’t prove it, and fans can’t disprove the claims.

Ethical concerns

Some critics have also cited a lack of responsible gambling and other ethical concerns regarding casino streaming as, in the quest for big wins, streamers frequently make risky moves and do not stick to a strict budget. In this respect, it is probably healthiest to see casino streaming as a form of entertainment.

Lack of responsible gambling warnings

Linked to this, casino streamers are regularly criticized for allegedly not displaying enough warnings for gambling. Licensed operators are required to display warnings and age limits, but critics argue that streamers typically don’t mention these mechanisms. They claim this can lead to new players wagering higher after seeing casino streamers hit jackpots. Most casino streamers broadcast entertainment content rather than education, but there is a lack of globally accepted standards around responsible gambling messaging.

Another ethical concern raised by critics is that casinos sponsor many streamers, and those content creators are potentially biased by the platform paying them. They argue this creates a conflict of interest, as streamers earn by getting viewers to sign up. Critics claim this may lead to streamers highlighting big wins but downplaying losses.

This pushback isn’t limited to critics, as some regulators have also flagged casinos streaming as a consumer protection issue. Authorities in certain jurisdictions have taken action against gambling advertising that targets minors or poses any other ethical risk.

Casino Streaming in Summary

Casino streaming is big business with multi-million dollar deals commonplace and huge audiences regularly available to watch the most popular streamers play games. Video slots are by far the most popular option, with streamers preferring high volatility games with plenty of bonus features for the best chance of big wins.

While Twitch was initially the main platform, Kick has overtaken it for gambling content following rules changes in recent years. Sponsorship is becoming more frequent, with crypto platforms such as Stake especially involved in funding major streamers to play games on their platform.

The industry is not without its critics, though, with concerns around fake money and lax responsible gambling messages both issues that may have to be addressed in the coming years.
