Dan Clancy says viewbotting hurts Twitch, announces viewership cap
Dan Clancy says viewbotting hurts Twitch, announces viewership cap
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has announced that streamers caught inflating their views will be punished by facing a viewership cap, as the platform tries to combat the viewbotting issue.
Viewbotting isn’t a new phenomenon, and the issue has plagued all major livestreaming platforms in recent years. A recent example is iShowSpeed, and the IRL YouTuber confirmed that he was
targeted by a malicious viewbotting campaign. This highlights that it isn’t always a creator abusing bots, which is why Twitch had stated it’s hard to know if streamers are violating rules or being targeted. Dan Clancy has now shared new enforcement actions Twitch will take in a bid to get rid of this issue.
Twitch will start capping the concurrent views of streamers found to be viewbotting
Dan Clancy posted on X talking about the difficulties Twitch was facing to combat viewbotting, because the services were continuously adapting and bypassing the platform’s detection systems. He went on to say that “Viewbotting is bad for our business. We don’t benefit from it, and we believe it harms the creator ecosystem overall.”
The Twitch CEO announced that the platform is introducing a new enforcement system, which will temporarily cap a creator’s concurrent viewership (CCV) if they are consistently found to be viewbotting; that is, inflating the live view count artificially.

Clancy explained how the system will work:
A streamer’s viewership will be compared to their historic non-viewbotted traffic and action
will be taken if the platform determines the creator is using bots. The enforcement will cover “all Twitch surfaces” and will be for “a fixed period of time”, but repeat offenders will face harsher punishments. Twitch won’t publicly announce when action is taken against a creator for viewbotting, but
Clancy stated streamers will have the option to appeal any enforcement.
Twitch ultimately aims to curb the use of viewbotting with this new enforcement type, but some users have voiced concerns about legitimate streamers who are being targeted also being affected by the system. Clancy has
previously acknowledged this, mentioning that taking action against viewbotting is hard because it is challenging to determine whether a creator is using bots or a malicious third party is targeting them.
It remains to be seen whether this new enforcement action will ultimately help stop viewbotting on Twitch, but the effectiveness of the system should become clearer over time.
