Popular livestreaming platform Twitch has updated its rule regarding multistreaming, and this latest update has led to harsh criticism from multiple streamers claiming that Twitch is killing multistreaming options on the platform.

Multistreaming isn’t new, but the practice has recently started to become significantly more popular. Many popular Twitch streamers, such as Zack “Asmongold” Hoyt and John “Tectone” Robertson, have begun multistreaming their content across multiple platforms. That success and the accompanying greater earnings potential has attracted many other content creators on Twitch to start multistreaming.

This recent rise in multistreaming and the increase in popularity of other rival streaming platforms, such as Kick, has seemingly worried Twitch. The Amazon-backed platform is implementing rules to potentially limit the reach of streamers who want to start multistreaming. Twitch has updated its multistreaming enforcement notes, and many streamers have expressed their outrage over the platform’s new rules.

Why streamers are angry about Twitch’s updated multistreaming rules

Many streamers claim Twitch is introducing new rules creating limitations around multistreaming on the platform so that content creators will be wary of streaming on other platforms and advertising those alternative streams.

Twitch’s updated enforcement notes state streamers can’t actively promote or redirect viewers to another livestreaming platform. The platform permits streamers to link their channel from other platforms in their Twitch bio, but actively promoting them isn’t allowed. Twitch doesn’t elaborate on what exactly “actively promoting” means, which has confused many streamers and general platform users alike.

In attempting to answer some of those questions, the platform mentioned that large banners advertising other competitors and directly asking viewers to go to another livestreaming platform are among the prohibited behaviors.

Twitch multistreaming rules

Many streamers are up in arms about this new development regarding multistreaming on Twitch. Some content creators have even gone as far as to claim Twitch is censoring them. They are alleging that Twitch is limiting streamers’ abilities to promote their other channels to make it harder to multistream. If Twitch streamers are unable to promote their channels on Kick or YouTube as extensively as they once might have, their earnings potential via multistreaming may be significantly lower. Many content creators may not want to risk incurring Twitch’s wrath by making any mention of their streams on other platforms.

Kick CEO Eddie Craven also gave his input, emphasizing that relying on a single platform is a risky move for any streamer. Craven recommended diversifying across multiple platforms to better diversify audience and create more opportunities with viewers.

Twitch streamers who have started multistreaming on other platforms have experienced a large amount of viewers watching elsewhere. Asmongold even managed to solidify his position as the most-watched streamer thanks to his multistreaming on both Twitch and Kick.

This is beneficial for streamers, but Twitch is a business looking to protect its private interests. The platform may see viewers being redirected elsewhere to other platforms as harmful to its bottom line, thus the rule clarification that has streamers up in arms.
