FromSoftware fans have renewed hopes regarding a possible Bloodborne 2, remake, or remaster following a string of Sony DMCA crackdowns.
Bloodborne is regarded by many as one of the greatest video games ever made. The game combines FromSoftware’s ever-popular combat with a gothic horror setting that eventually spirals into the cosmos. From top to bottom, the game is revered by fans and critics alike.
So why hasn’t Sony actually done anything with it!? While the original title was a smash hit in 2015, the only addition to the game was its The Old Hunters DLC. There has been no PC port, PlayStation 5 re-release, remaster, remake, or sequel. There haven’t even been next-gen upgrade ports, like those seen for Dark Souls 3.
Fans have still held out hope for years, though. They’re mustering up some fresh hope now, too, after YouTuber, streamer, and modder Lance McDonald discussed YouTube videos being struck with DMCA takedowns by Sony.
YouTube videos showing a 60-FPS Bloodborne mod were taken down by Sony, per content creator Lance McDonald.
Years ago, McDonald created mods for Bloodborne showing that the game could be played at 60 frames per second at 720p resolution on a PlayStation 4 Pro using a mod he created. Later, he improved this on PlayStation 5 hardware. Alongside this, Nightmare Kart creator Lilith Walther stated that she received similar treatment concerning videos of her Bloodborne PSX demake.
McDonald expressed hope that this could indicate that Sony has something cooking for Bloodborne.
So is there any hope of a Bloodborne 2, remaster, PC port, or anything else? Executives from both Sony and FromSoftware have indicated that there’s a desire for this to happen, while also putting the onus on the other company to make it a reality.
Former SIE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida suggested in an interview that FromSoftware and its president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, have been too busy over the years to do anything with Bloodborne. On the flipside, Miyazaki stated in a 2024 interview that he’s “not opposed to it” and that others in FromSoftware want it to happen while stressing that Bloodborne is a Sony-owned IP.
Surrounding all this have been reports and leaks regarding in-development Bloodborne projects. These range from a never-finished PC build of the game developed in Windows 7 to a movie starring Bill Skarsgard.
This suggests that the two sides have discussed the matter, but haven’t come to terms. Regardless, there’s no official word.
Bloodborne was a commercial and critical success, which ought to lead to some kind of follow-up.
The 2024 cyberattacks of Insomniac Games leaked exact sales figures of every first-party Sony game. Included in that was confirmation that Bloodborne generated over $83 million from digital sales alone, as of June 2023. This figure does not include any physical sales of the game.
Given the game being a financial success and earning rave reviews, it’s odd that Sony hasn’t yet followed up on it in some way. The numbers make it feel like an inevitability but a decade removed from the game’s release, it’s hard to be sure.
