The Social Reckoning: Will Sequel Live up to the Original?

The Social Reckoning is going to come out next weekend, the long-awaited follow-up to 2010’s The Social Network, the Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg biopic. That is largely hailed as a masterpiece and considered one of the best biopics ever. But can the sequel match up? Kalshi traders are not convinced according to the current implied probability at the prediction market.
The prediction for The Social Reckoning
Legacy sequels are hard, especially when the original movie is a beloved classic. The Social Network is sitting at a pristine 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the best marks possible. Kalshi traders simply don’t believe the sequel will match up.

The expected Kalshi forecast is right at 69.3% at the time of writing. That has held strong for a while and is a solid but unspectacular mark. It obviously does not live up to the original. Here’s what traders are currently saying about its Rotten Tomatoes score and respective implied probability:
- 45+: 93%
- 50+: 88%
- 55+: 79%
- 60+: 69%
- 65+: 63%
- 70+: 48%
- 75+: 37%
- 80+: 26%
- 85: +12%
- 90+: 5%

There is a steep drop-off after 65, which is where the 69.3 forecast comes in. The majority of traders believe the movie will be decent, but that it will not reach the heights the original did. We recently covered Resident Evil on Rotten Tomatoes, with Kalshi traders expecting that to be a more acclaimed movie with critics.
Why it’s hard to pin down
Sequels are often guaranteed hits, but that’s more true when they happen sooner and with the same people. That’s not the case for The Social Reckoning. Most of the pieces of the puzzle are absent this time around with Mark Zuckerberg being played by Jeremy Strong.
The Social Network was written by Aaron Sorkin, directed by David Fincher, and starred Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Dakota Johnson, and Justin Timberlake.
The Social Reckoning is written and directed by Sorkin, and it stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Bill Burr; it’s a very different team surrounding Sorkin this time.
Sorkin is hailed (and his awards and award nominations back it up) as one of the best screenwriters in Hollywood. As a director, though, it’s more of a mixed bag. Moviegoers often believe he needs a strong director (like Fincher) to rein in his worst tendencies. There is no such director on this project.
Plus, there is always the potential that people will dislike a sequel simply because it’s not the original. With a classic like The Social Network, an inferior product runs the risk of being viewed as worse by comparison. The movie may well be good, but some people will dock it for being nowhere close to the original. This is unfair but not uncommon, while the storyline will focus on a very different period of Facebook’s history rather than just the origin story.
☑️ My Take
I believe that Aaron Sorkin is probably the best writer working in Hollywood right now. I do not believe that he’s a weak director or that he needs someone else to make his projects good — Molly’s Game is evidence that he can write and direct a hit.
There is also serious talent involved with this movie. Jeremy Strong appears, based on trailers, to be delivering an Oscar-level performance as Mark Zuckerberg. He’s not Jesse Eisenberg, but that piece of the movie should still be firing on all cylinders. The rest of the cast is good, too, so there’s potential.
However, there’s still going to be plenty of reason not to love this movie, so I believe the Kalshi traders predicting something in the upper 60s are not far off. My estimate would be in the 70s, meaning that a little over a third of critics will give it a positive score. That feels fair for a movie that has strangely become controversial before it is even released.
