Mythical Island has arrived in Pokemon TCG Pocket, and these cards will make the best additions to any player’s collection.
Pokemon TCG Pocket’s mini set just dropped, bringing 86 new cards to the popular free-to-play mobile app. Out of the 86 Mythical Island cards, 68 are numbered, six are illustration rare and 10 are special illustration rare variations of those cards, one is an ultra rare immersive, and one is a gold crown card. Basically, Mythical Island means more pack opening in order to collect ‘em all. But some Pokemon TCG Pocket players are also in it for the competitive side. Pocket has a simplified version of the traditional competitive card game, meaning there is a meta with top decks that are winning matches.
Here are the most competitively viable cards players will want to pull in Mythical Island packs right now based on the current meta.
The only card with an immersive rare variant in Mythical Island, Celebi ex is actually a very useful card for anyone playing Grass decks right now. Celebi ex has a pretty okay 130 HP that will keep it alive for a few rounds as players attach an abundance of energies. Then, Celebi ex does 50 damage per energy attached. This could spell big damage especially when paired with the next Pokemon.
If Celebi ex is the main attacker in the active spot, Serperior is a must-have supporting Pokemon on the bench. This fellow Grass Pokemon has an ability that says each grass energy attached to any Grass Pokemon is worth two. This means even having two grass on Celebi ex will instantly do 200 damage, allowing for fast knockouts. Serperior is also potentially good with the currently strong Venusaur ex deck, although it could take a while to evolve both Pokemon fully.
Mew ex is just as strong in Pokemon TCG Pocket as it was in the traditional TCG just a few seasons ago. The Psychic Pokemon can easily fit into most decks due to its colorless attack, Genome Hacking, which allows players to choose an attack from their active Pokemon. This means Mew ex can do powerful attacks from meta decks like Pikachu ex and Charizard ex without having those cards in a player’s own deck. Expect to see Mew ex in a variety of decks, but probably Mewtwo ex the most.
Water decks already have impressive energy acceleration due to the Misty support card, but Vaporeon has made this mechanic even stronger. Vaporeon’s ability Wash Out lets players move water energy from the bench to the active Pokemon as many times as they’d like each turn. This can easily power up strong attacks on cards like Articuno ex and Starmie ex. It’s also great for defensive play. If Articuno ex is heavily damaged, retreat onto the bench for a healthy Pokemon, then let Vaporeon’s Wash Out ensure all the energy is moved to the new active.
The already existing Old Amber card in Genetic Apex has great synergy with Aerodactyl ex. This will make Aerodactyl ex a great addition to most Fighting decks. It uses its Primeval Law ability to force the opponent to evolve a benched Pokemon before swapping it into the active. Combine with Sabrina, a supporter that demands players move a benched Pokemon into the active, to take control of a player’s board.
This interesting item card is great for Psychic decks. Mythical Slab allows players to look at the top card of their deck and put it into their hand if it’s a Psychic Pokemon. This provides more draw power and just one more way to get the Pokemon a trainer needs into their hand. Players will likely see Mythical Slab in Mewtwo ex decks since it’s quite important for some variations of this deck to have a Gardevoir on the board for energy acceleration. Mythical Slab aims to make the setup a bit faster. Thanks to it’s synergy with multiple Psychic decks, it’s one of the best trainer cards to open from a Mythical Islands pack.
