Initially founded in 2013 by Carlos “ocelote” Rodriguez, G2 Esports signed its first Counter-Strike: Global Offensive roster at the beginning of 2015 with the addition of Paweł "innocent" Mocek, Grzegorz "SZPERO" Dziamałek, Mikołaj "mouz" Karolewski, Karol "rallen" Radowicz, and Jacek "MINISE" Jeziak.
The roster was quickly replaced with that of Team Kinguin, but would eventually become a French squad in January 2016 with the signing of the legendary Titan roster consisting of in-game leader Kevin “Ex6TenZ” Droolans, Cédric “RpK” Guipouy, Edouard “SmithZz” Dubourdeaux, Richard “shox” Papillon, and Adil “ScreaM” Benrlitom.
MLG Columbus was both the first real success and the first failure for the roster. While G2 managed to take an impressive third seed in the CSGO Major’s group stage, it was later eliminated by Virtus.pro in ninth place.
The elimination was the first in a string of disappointing performances that led to the dismissal of captain Ex6TenZ in favor of a young Alexandre “bodyy” Pianoaro. This change was for the better, as ScreaM and shox came alive with the new roster as it placed second at the ESL Pro League Season 3 finals and took home the title at ECS Season 1.
Weeks later, however, G2 placed last at the next CSGO Major, ESL One Cologne 2016. The team continued to show inconsistency over the rest of 2016. While it managed to finish in second place at StaLadder & iLeague Season 2, the roster bombed out of yet another CSGO Major, ELEAGUE Atlanta, in just 12th place.
G2’s inconsistent results and disappointing Major placements led to the retirement of SmithZz, who moved to a coaching role within the organization, and the release of both ScreaM and RpK. In their place, G2 brought in famed AWPer Kenny “kennyS” Shrub along with Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt and Dan "apEX" Madesclaire. G2’s new lineup was considered a superteam by both fans and analysts. With the changes, G2 had successfully brought together the most famous French players under one organization.
Despite the talent on the team, G2’s star-studded lineup started off slow. The team took home first place at DreamHack Tours 2017 against HellRaisers, but were exposed once again at a CSGO Major.
G2’s Major curse continued with its new roster at the 2017 PGL Krakow Major with another finish outside the top 10. The French roster garnered a reputation for beating clearly weaker opponents but ultimately lacking the synergy to compete against teams at their own level.
The team would go through several more roster changes throughout 2017 and 2018, seeing mixed results along the way.
2019 would prove to be the starting point for a G2 roster full of young stars. The organization parted ways with NBK, SmithZz, apEX, and bodyy, and targeted younger players as it built the team around veteran kennyS. By the end of 2019, G2’s roster consisted of kennyS, Audric “JaCkz” Jug, François “AmaNEk” Delaunay, Nemanja “nexa” Isaković, and Nemanja “huNter-” Kovač.
After an adjustment period, the team would gel in the opening months of 2020. G2 then went on to notch a third-place finish at BLAST Premier Spring 2020, second place at IEM Katowice, second place at the ESL One Rio qualifier “Road to Rio,” and yet another second-place finish at DreamHack Masters Spring 2020.
