With Dota 2 growing rapidly around the globe and China boasting an incredible volume of talent, Vici Gaming was formed in 2012. Rather than signing established players from other organizations, Vici Gaming’s debut roster was largely comprised of rising stars that hadn’t yet established themselves at the pro level.
Vici Gaming competed in various leagues in 2013, posting solid results. The team fell just short of qualifying for The International 2013 through the eastern qualifiers, getting edged out by LGD Gaming and RattleSnake.
This led to a dispute between the team and captain Xu "fy" Linsen, with the player attempting to leave the team. The two sides reconciled and fy would ultimately stay with the team for several years to come.
Following TI3, Vici Gaming split with much of its roster. Rather than scouting undiscovered talent, the organization instead picked up free agents from elite teams including LGD and Team DK including Xie "Super" Junhao and Liu "Sylar" Jiajun. The new Vici Gaming established itself as a force on the Chinese scene by winning the second season of the Sina Cup Supernova competition. The team then became globally recognized after winning the ESL Major Series One Fall Season.
Though Vici Gaming went through a first-place slump from there, the team posted enough solid placements to earn an invitation to The International 2014. Vici topped the group stage with a 12-3 record and ultimately finished in second at the event behind Newbee.
The team again underwent some significant changes despite that success and surprised many by looking outside China to rebuild, adding Singapore’s Daryl Koh "iceiceice" Pei Xiang and Germany’s Dominik "Black^" Reitmeier. The decision paid off as Vici Gaming posted a series of strong placements in the following season, including first place at ESL One New York 2014, second place at the 2015 Dota Asia Championship, and fourth at The International 2015.
Vici Gaming went into a sharp decline in the following season. The team posted disappointing finishes in the first two Valve-sponsored majors and went into a total tailspin from there, with high roster turnover leading to the team struggling to qualify for any notable tournaments. The team missed The International 2016, and those woes continued through the following season.
The team revealed a heavily overhauled roster following TI7, which included the addition of Zhang "Paparazi" Chengjun. The team wasn’t able to return to its previous form, but was solid throughout the year and posted strong showings at the ESL One Katowice Major and MDL Changsha Major. Those wins earned the team a spot in The International 2018, which saw the team finish in 12th place.
Though Vici Gaming was on an upward trajectory, the team was overhauled yet again. It was a bold move, but it paid off as Vici Gaming established itself as an elite team once again in the 2018-2019 Dota Pro Circuit season with wins at the DreamLeague Season 11 Major and 2019 Epicenter Major. The team finished in the top six at The International 2019, and this time the organization largely stood by its roster.
The 2019-2020 Dota Pro Circuit season saw the team maintain its previous success with top-three finishes at the MDL Chengdu Major and DreamLeague Season 13 Major.
