Where Will Resident Evil Land on Rotten Tomatoes?

Resident Evil hasn't yet been rated on Rotten Tomatoes

Resident Evil is the next video game adaptation set to hit theaters or television screens as the genre continues to explode. On September 18 it will finally be out, and everyone will get to see what Zach Cregger and Sony have cooked up.

There has been a lot of backlash online already. Avid fans of the game are frustrated because it’s a movie set within the universe and has some creative liberties taken, rather than a one-to-one adaptation of a specific game. Others are glad someone’s taking a different approach with this adaptation.

That makes it hard to predict how the world is going to feel about the movie. Nevertheless, traders on Polymarket are currently suggesting that it’s going to end up with a pretty decent Rotten Tomatoes score.

Polymarket traders predict Resident Evil score

If the prediction market on Polymarket is any indication, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is going to be a good movie. Most believe it will easily land a positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, the popular movie aggregator site.

Here are the current predictions:

For what it’s worth, landing in the 70s, even though that is the lowest market available, would be easily the best score this long-running film franchise has received. They have tried and failed to make Resident Evil movies for over two decades

Some of the official Capcom animated projects, set in the same continuity as the games, have been solid. Two movies are “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes (60% or higher), but the live-action movies have all flopped.

Backlash from fans

As mentioned, the backlash from rabid Resident Evil game fans has been loud. They’re upset that Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Jill Valentine, and others won’t show up in Zach Cregger’s version of Raccoon City.

It appears, both from trailers and Cregger’s comments, that this movie will take place in and around Raccoon City, but it’s going to have its own events not tied to the events of any game: it will have its own characters, locations, and enemies.

Plenty of the fanbase are frustrated that this is the case. The story from the games is great, especially the second and fourth games. Why make changes when adapting a story? It seems to some that Cregger has no respect for the games and wants to make a horror movie with the branding of the game series.

There is also some frustration over there being iPhones (the events the movie takes place around are originally set in 2002) and snow (it wasn’t snowing in any of the original games), but those are creative liberties Cregger has admitted to taking because it fits his stylistic choice; whether it pays off is the real question.

☑️ My view

There are two considerations to factor in when predicting how good Resident Evil will be. First, that fans are very upset about some things. Second, that Zach Cregger has a good track record. His other two movies, Barbarian (92%) and Weapons (93%), have been well-received.

It’s also true that the fans complaining seem to be a vocal minority. They also do not make up the body of reviews that will be aggregated for this score. There may be some diehard fans who factor in, but not many.

With that in mind, it’s easy to predict a very high score, although Polymarket traders aren’t convinced it’ll pass 90%. My best guess is 85+, which currently sits at a solid 56% chance according to the prediction market.

Will GTA 6 and Wolverine Reach The Expected Metacritic Score Heights? Zachary Roberts In 2026, it is highly likely that no two games will be bigger than GTA 6 and Marvel's Wolverine. GTA 6 obviously takes the cake, but Wolverine has a strong case for second. For some, especially fans of comic books and superheroes, Wolverine might be first on the list. Either way, since Rockstar Games and Insomniac are two of the most beloved developers today, these two games are likely to ...
