New to Prediction Markets? Here’s What You Need to Know

Event trading on prediction markets platforms is a relatively new way for you to predict the outcome of events by using your knowledge of current events in the hope of making a profit. Rather than standard betting, prediction markets are about backing the right options at the right price and then either hanging on to your selection until the market ends and the result is known, or you also have an option to trade away your selection to either make a small profit, or reduce your losses.

In the same way that the value of stocks and shares can rise and fall once you have invested in them, so too can the value of your football prediction options that you have backed. It is these rises and falls in value which allow you to make trades right through until the market is settled as per the specified parameters.

Let’s explain this process in a bit more detail.

How Prediction Markets Work

Prediction markets are very similar in process to investing in Stocks and Shares. However, with Stocks and Shares, money is made by trading as there is no end point for shares, they simply fluctuate in value.

It is slightly different for prediction markets, as they do have an end point. For example, if you wanted Spain to reach the 2026 World Cup Final. A prediction market may offer you a 35% chance of that happening and a 65% of it not happening. If you wanted to buy one ‘share’ of Spain, that would cost you 0.35 in your chosen currency and 0.65 to back them not to reach the final. So if you bought ten shares in Spain to reach the final, it would cost you 3.50 and 100 shares would cost you 35.00.

Now as Spain progresses through the tournament, their price for this market will change based on their performances. For example, if Spain win all their group games comfortably and have a relatively easy opponent in the Round of 16, then their odds of reaching the final would improve and their price would increase in value.

You could then opt to sell your Spain shares for a small profit, or keep hold of them in the hope they continue their great form through to the final.

If Spain do reach the final and win the World Cup, then your share value would increase to the maximum of 1.00 per share. Which would be a 0.65 profit per share you hold. However, if they lose at any point up to and including the final and are eliminated, then your trade loses and you lose all your stake.

The Legality of Prediction Markets

Yes, prediction markets are legal in the United States and are regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). These types of transactions are considered as financial derivatives, rather than a form of betting.

Kalshi, Polymarket and Crypto.com are all approved and regulated by the CFTC in the US.

Finding Value in Prediction Markets

This is where sports betting enthusiasts may well feel at home as it is through research that you will find value in prediction markets. In particular, you are looking for markets that have been overvalued/undervalued, which you feel will offer you the best chance of a profit.

Researching teams is the best way to identify these over and under valued markets. For example, if your research shows that Argentina are likely to progress to the World Cup Final and win it, but are valued at 0.15 to win the tournament, this means the current Champions are undervalued.

Alternatively, if they are valued at 0.55 to win the tournament, they are overvalued, so backing them not to win the tournament is the undervalued option and worth backing if you feel that your research suggests they won’t lift the trophy again.

Finally, you may find the best value in outright markets before the first matchday. For the Golden Boot, for example, consider which of the world’s best forwards, such as Harry Kane or Kylian Mbappe, are likely to come up against lower-ranked sides; the new format means that there is an extra round of games as and a few first-time qualifiers — Cape Verde, Jordan, Uzbekistan, and Curacao will all make their first appearance at a World Cup.
