Polystrike Turns a Dota 2 Mod Into a Standalone Tactical Shooter

After the community-made mod found success within the community, developer and publisher Robin Entertainment has decided to turn Polystrike into a proper standalone game.

Community-made mods of games finding success within the respective game’s community is nothing new. However, only a handful of those mods are able to go on and become a standalone game. One of the more recent examples is The Forgotten City, which started as a mod for The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

Dota 2 is about to get a similar treatment, as one of its most successful mods is on the cusp of turning into a standalone game. Polystrike brings the top-down goodness of Dota but does more than enough to stand on its own two feet with an original universe, tactical gameplay, and a dedicated team that wants to create something special.

Dota 2 mod turns into a full-fledged game called Polystrike

Created as a custom arcade mode and community mod for Dota 2 by game developer Mark Mocherad, Polystrike is a competitive, top-down tactical shooter that prioritizes teamwork and information gathering.

The game retains the core 5v5 aspect, but everything else is different from Valve’s IP. The game prioritizes tactical combat over MOBA gameplay, a major departure from the original mod it was based on.

Players choose their weapons, armor, helmets, and other factors that ensure they stand out from other players. This means that there aren’t any predefined classes or predetermined heroes to choose from. Countering the enemy isn’t just a matter of counter-picking their heroes, but adapting to their weapons and strategies.

Polystrike combines dynamic fog of war and directional visibility with sound cues that can help players determine what to do next. The game may have the traditional attacking and defending teams, but the objective is much more dynamic. Polystrike’s objective is Iron Fish, which is the living objective that players fight over. Instead of the attackers having a static bomb, they have to guide a spider drone toward the living Iron Fish so it can hack into it and initiate the self-destruction sequence.

With some questioning whether Dota is dying, this game switches things up by introducing multiple maps that have distinct identities. It isn’t a stretch to say that Polystrike takes the high-intensity gameplay loop of Valorant or Counter-Strike and turns it into a top-down experience.

While Polystrike’s Stream release date is confirmed for October 2028, the game also has private playtests.

Polystrike is confirmed to come out on PC via Steam, but it’s unconfirmed whether the game will come out on any console at launch. While the overall gameplay would make it tough for it to be playable with a controller, the developer may decide to introduce it to an entirely new audience.

As for the game itself, it’s completely separate from Dota 2. Polystrike has its own universe and identity, ensuring that it can be a long-term original IP instead of a hobby. Players can expect competitive PvP with new missions and stories added through subsequent updates, with the game being added to 7,000 Steam wishlists in the first two weeks of the game’s announcement.
