Pennsylvania posts huge gambling revenue for January 2026

Pennsylvania’s gambling industry has gotten the year 2026 off to a strong start, with the US state reporting better than a 10% year-over-year growth in revenue for January 2026 compared to the same month in 2025.
Pennsylvania is one of the leading regulated gambling markets in the United States of America, with the state consistently generating hundreds of millions in betting tax revenues. The state offers several gaming options for its millions of players, including land-based casinos, iGaming options, and sports wagering.
Online casinos started to become more popular in Pennsylvania, similar to other states, and analysts expect the sector may become the key in the market moving forward. iGaming and sports wagering were central to Pennsylvania’s January 2026 gambling revenue hitting its high mark, rising 11.6% compared to the previous year.
Pennsylvania gambling revenue dips from December 2025 despite YoY rise
Pennsylvania ended 2025 with a massive $616.7 million in gambling revenue, which dropped roughly 4% in January 2026. This lull was largely expected, as December is typically the peak of sports betting in US states due to the NFL season coming to a peak and related sports wagering pulling in large numbers of bets.
Industry analysts didn’t pay much heed to the decrease and instead focused on the positive year-on-year increase. The continued rise and prevalence of online casinos in Pennsylvania was a key element in this growth, signifying the shift in player trends towards digital alternatives compared to more traditional in-person casino experiences.

Land-based casinos still contributed a strong $265 million, with slots specifically accounting for $189 million and table games bringing in $76 million. By comparison, online casinos generated $249 million, slightly less than land-based casinos. The growth of iGaming has been consistent, with many analysts continuing to predict that it should take over land-based alternatives in the future.
Sports wagering accounted for $71 million, a 38.6% YoY growth, despite the noticeable decrease in total handle.
Pennsylvania’s online casino growth has been a model for other states and is second only to New Jersey. This isn’t shocking, as New Jersey has long dominated in the iGaming space with a strong history of legal betting options in the state leading to a smooth transition into modern online betting, as New Jersey ended 2025 with land-based casinos behind digital alternatives.
Other US states, such as Maine, are still in the process of legalizing online casinos and seem likely to join in on the financial benefits of iGaming in the near future.
Pennsylvania taxes each sector at varying rates, but the state generated a total of approximately $250 million in betting tax revenues. The largest contributor to that number was iGaming, which alone generated over $113 million in tax revenue for use by the state. Land-based casinos generated roughly $108 million, and sports betting generated a modest $26 million.
The generated taxes are used for various purposes in-state, including developmental projects and education funding.
