It’s been confirmed that a live action Legend of Zelda movie is coming but this left many fans wondering if the actor portraying Link would talk or not.
Fans of the Legend of Zelda series know that Link doesn’t say much out loud in any game. From 1986 till now, Link has talked with mostly grunts and yells. But would Link do the same in a live action film? The movie director has shared some insight into this conversation.
Video game movies and television shows are having their moment after The Super Mario Bros Movie exploded in the box office. It became one of the highest-grosses movies of all time so it’s no wonder that Nintendo has agreed to give Legend of Zelda a similar treatment. Here’s what we know about Link on the big screen.
Will Link talk in the movie?
Right now, it’s unclear what the live-action movie will be about. Will it take from the original lore and have moments from the game? Since it’s not clear how close it will be to the games, fans have started wondering if the main protagonist will talk with grunts or not.
Wes Ball, the director of the upcoming film, spoke to
Comic Book
about this hot topic: “A or B or C. I’ll just have it like the game — you just have a little dialogue boxes pop up in the movie and you pick which one you want. Link does communicate to villagers all over through the game, you just don’t hear his voice.”
This is a bit vague, but it sounds like Ball is claiming Link does talk in the game, so he will also speak in the move, or that maybe Link will talk through dialogue bubbles to be even more accurate. This second option is probably not the case since Ball previously admitted that he wanted the live-action film to be more “grounded and real” than the video games.
Most likely Ball just has to be tight-lipped about the movie because it’s still too early to reveal anything. All we know is that Ball wants it to feel like a “live-action Studio Ghibli movie” but the actors and plot — and Link’s dialogue — is still a mystery.
