This year’s hottest RPG Hogwarts Legacy has garnered tons of attention for its setting in the iconic wizarding world of Harry Potter. But some Harry Potter fans are curious when does Hogwarts Legacy take place in time within the series’ lore?

Since the game’s announcement in 2020, fans have been eager to know more about the magical Hogwarts universe. The immersive, open-world action role-playing game is a dream come true for the Potterheads still waiting for their acceptance letter. However, the original Harry Potter characters and storyline will remain absent due to the time difference.

Among many other things, fans are now wondering when does the Hogwarts Legacy takes place? Will Albus Dumbledore and Newt Scamander make an appearance?

When does the Hogwarts Legacy take place?

Hogwarts Legacy takes place almost 100 years before the Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter franchise. So don’t expect to see your favorite characters in this game since it’s set in the 1800s.

According to the official website, the game occurs sometime during the 1800s. The exact date wasn’t mentioned, but a newspaper in the official trailer hinted that the plot kick-started in 1890. It’s unknown how old the newspaper is, but the central storyline of the Goblin rebellion likely triggered around September 1st, 1890. If that’s the case, then Hogwarts Legacy may have some connections with the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts storyline.

The lead characters of primary Hogwarts-related movies were born years after the game story began in 1890. Newt Scamander stepped foot into Hogwarts’ magical hallway in 1908 and saw some historical events unfold. The beast tamer fought the wizards during the muggle World War 2 when Gellert Grindelwald’s conflict with the wizarding world was also culminating. If this timeline makes it to Hogwarts Legacy, players may get a deeper look into the life happenings of Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

If 1890 ends up being the actual date, Dumbledore would join the school about two years later. So, his mention and appearance aren’t entirely out of the picture. However, it’s unlikely that Hogwarts Legacy would add to the already existing Harry Potter lore. According to the website, these experiences have not been written by J.K. Rowling and will not be direct adaptations of the books and films.

What happens in Hogwarts Legacy?

There appears to be a cold war between the wizards and Goblins, the brilliant race known to control the economy in the Hogwarts universe. This goblin rebellion might be at the center of the game’s lore. However, nothing can be said for sure about the gameplay just yet.
