Fans of Klonoa are excited for the character’s return after Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series was announced for the Nintendo Switch and other modern platforms. But what can we expect after all these years? What exactly is included in the new game?
Klonoa has become a recognizable character in gaming throughout the years thanks to his stylish design and positive personality. But it’s been a while since Klonoa has had any new games, the most recent being a remake of the original Klonoa title released in 2008 for the Wii.
Now, Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is bringing two remasters to the Nintendo Switch. Here is everything we know so far about the upcoming release.
The upcoming collection includes remastered versions of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile is a platformer developed by Namco that was originally released for PlayStation in 1997. It’s the first game in the Klonoa series, following the tale of Klonoa attempting to save a dream world from an evil spirit that wants to turn it into a world of nightmares.
The game was applauded for its gameplay, graphics, and cutscenes. It was seen as the epitome of the Japanese video game style at the time. It was also seen as a success, inspiring a sequel, Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil for PlayStation 2 in 2001.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile was remade for the Wii in 2008, and now both original games are coming to modern consoles and platforms in remastered fashion.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch on July 8, 2022. It will cost $39.99 at its release date, regardless of the platform you choose to play it on.
While long-time fans of Klonoa are no doubt excited about the remastered games coming to modern consoles, people who are not as familiar with Klonoa might be surprised to see these old games coming out again in 2022.
The collection’s producer, Ryo Ishida, is hoping the remakes are just the beginning for Klonoa. According to an interview with VGC, Ishida is hoping that players will enjoy the original games on Klonoa’s 25th anniversary and then want new titles featuring the protagonist.
“Alongside the memories that our existing fans have, we have also made the game more appealing and [suitable for younger gamers] and also people who haven’t [discovered Klonoa] yet. That’s why even though our main target is veteran gamers, we hope that a large variety of game fans will enjoy and experience the charm and appeal of the original Klonoa games,” Ishida explained.
Klonoa started off as a character known as “Shady,” but designer Yoshihiko Arai felt he was lacking color. He was given animal eyes and long ears to give him more personality. He was then given a hat with Pac-Man on it to give him some additional style and energy.
Klonoa is known for never giving up no matter what thanks to his positivity and determination. He doesn’t like to be called a “kid,” often trying hard to prove himself. He is generally depicted as having respect for others, especially when they show heroic traits or strength. Klonoa is a kind character who tries to help whenever he can.
Klonoa is often called a “Dream Traveler,” because he travels to different places to protect dreams, whether or not he has a choice in the journey.
