Players still have a rank in Deadlock, but Valve has made the curious decision to not let players see it when they queue up.
The removal of ranked mode in Deadlock may indicate that the game has gone fully casual, but players are still clearly separated by their skill level. Matchmaking has combined both ranked and unranked into one, putting every player in the queue. While this may have improved matchmaking quality, the move has also upset ranked grinders by seemingly getting rid of ranks altogether. However, the system is still in place.
Here’s how Deadlock players can see their rank along with how it affects their
Players can see their rank in Deadlock by checking their profile and clicking on the skill rating section.
The game previously displayed ranks on the main menu whenever players clicked the play button. It was tied to the ranked mode, but when Valve got rid of that system, it also got rid of the rank display. This led some players to believe that ranks were gone entirely, but that isn’t the case. Valve just hid it away behind a few menus.
The actual rank values are still the exact same as before. They start at Initiate and scale all the way to Eternus with a dozen ranks in between. The Obscurus rank still exists for players who have not yet calibrated or have gone inactive. However, it is understandably not included on the list. The stars system for deviations between ranks is also still in effect, though it has switched to Roman numerals on the skill rating page.
Deadlock players can see their hero MMR on the skill rating page along with their core rank.
Deadlock uses hero MMR to gauge players’ skills depending on who they’ve selected on their matchmaking roster. This allows players trying out new heroes to play in slightly easier matches than they would get on their mains.
However, these heroes are not assigned a rank themselves. The game just uses green and red arrows to indicate perceived skill level relative to their core rank. The name core rank implies that individual character may get their own rank badges once Valve finally lays out plans for a real release.
