Innersloth’s Among Us had solo carried most of 2020’s gaming streamers on its back. While the game has recently flown under the radar, YouTube star Rachell “Valkyrae” Hofstetter believes it’s still thriving.

A product of small production, Among Us, entered the spotlight two years after its initial release in 2018. The online multiplayer had become one of the most viewed games in 2020, alongside the likes of GTA V and Minecraft.

The game’s popularity played a crucial role in Valkyrae’s breakthrough in the list of top streamers. The 100 Thieves’ content creator amply capitalized on the popular game, eventually moving past Imane “Pokimane” Anys to become the world’s top female streamer.

Most Among Us streamers have moved on to other games, but Valkyrae still lays her money on Innersloth’s creation.

In an episode of the CouRage & Nadeshot Show, the 100 Thieves’ streamer claimed that Among Us still has a loyal player base. The streamer realized that the game might have lost its appeal but viewers still like to watch people interact with one another in-game. She backed her claims with YouTube statistics and said that her Among Us content does better than the rest of her videos.

“Surprisingly people are still enjoying it, there’s still views for it on YouTube. I definitely have the most viewers when I play Among Us on YouTube and the videos do really well,” she said.

Valkyrae had peaked over 123,000 concurrent viewers on one of her Among Us streams most recently. Her channel’s statistics favor her claim that the player base may have slightly declined but viewers continue to like the in-game banter. The streamer further acknowledged that the game can still obtain its early glory if the developers work on new updates.

“I just wish they would add more content faster. They have a new map coming. It’s taking a very long time. I’m actually surprised. I feel like they’re missing out on this wave of popularity by taking this long,” Valkyrae said.

Is Among Us dying?

Among Us wasn’t a blockbuster from the outset but gained traction after a few streamers discovered it, leading to its meteoric rise. Famous Twitch personalities like Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris, Pokimane, and Felix “xQc” Lengyel darted the game to the top of the Steam list. Valkyrae was one of the first streamers to jump on the Among Us hype train, creating tons of content in collaboration with prominent names.

However, it’s no secret that Among Us is not as popular as before, and repetitive play could be blamed for the decline.

The sudden rise of the game led to various rumours of the developer working on Among Us 2 in an effort to keep the game alive. However, the announcement of map release wiped out the possibility of a sequel. A new map would likely restore the game’s popularity. For now, Valkyrae refuses to give up on the game despite the lack of updates.
