UPS lost the DreamHack Masters Dallas trophy won by Team Liquid
DreamHack Masters Dallas awarded Team Liquid a strange prize for winning the tournament.
After defeating ENCE Esports, the North American squad hoisted small table plaques and were given a set of oversized rings to celebrate their victory. According to a tweet by DreamHack, that’s because the actual trophy for the tournament was lost by delivery company United Parcel Service.
“As you may have noticed, the DreamHack Masters Dallas trophy has been nowhere to be seen all event,” the organizer said on
Twitter. “Unfortunately UPS has lost it and we’ve been unable to get it in time. We will ensure that the trophy gets shipped to Team Liquid once its found.”
Putting on a live esports event requires considerable effort from the organizer and transporting the top prize should have been one of the easiest steps of the ordeal. The lack of a trophy was met with snark from fans watching online, and made for a somewhat anticlimactic ending to the event.
The team didn’t seem to mind the lack of a trophy too much as they were shown celebrating and having fun on stage as the confetti dropped in the arena. The squad had plenty to smile about after, too.
Despite the tournament ending in awkward fashion, the first-place finish established Liquid as the top on the HLTV.org CS:GO rankings, the first time a North American organization has claimed that spot. It also added to Liquid’s rapidly growing trophy mantel, which also includes the top prizes from Intel Extreme Masters XIV Sydney and iBUYPOWER Masters IV.
There is no word yet on where the trophy is or when it might arrive for Liquid. The only other mention of the incident came in the form of tweets from DreamHack to ESL Gaming, with the organizer
making quips
about ESL being sponsored by rival package delivery company DHL.
Though Liquid’s performance certainly deserves a trophy, the team didn’t walk away empty-handed. In addition to the rings and plaques, the organization banked $100,000 in cash for winning the event.
