These two Lord of the Rings actors play League of Legends

An overlap between the Lord of the Rings movies and League of Legends is more likely than you might think, as two Lord of the Rings actors recently revealed they play League of Legends.

As much as one might expect it to be Orlando Bloom channeling his inner Legolas by playing Ashe, the Lord of the Rings actors that enjoy League of Legends are ones that played some of the less-combative characters in the films. So which Lord of the Rings actors play League of Legends?

Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan play League of Legends

Billy Boyd, the actor for Peregrine “Pippin” Took, and Dominic Monaghan, the actor for Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck, are avid League of Legends fans.

The two of them discussed how they got into League of Legends at length in their podcast “The Friendship Onion,” and how League of Legends became a way to stay connected and enjoy each others’ company through the difficulties of isolation in 2020.

Once League of Legends fans and creators caught wind that actors from the hit fantasy adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s mythos played the game, the two were welcomed with open arms into the community. Boyd and Monaghan even hosted an episode of the Friendship Onion at the Worlds 2022 finals in San Francisco.

What roles do Merry and Pippin play in League of Legends?

Billy Boyd is primarily a jungler, but his favorite champion is Heimerdinger. Dominic Monaghan on the other hand seems happy in nearly every role, playing Jinx, Ahri, and Teemo top as some of his examples of his favorite characters.

He spoke to Travis Gafford on the official League of Legends podcast about his enthusiasm for poke-heavy playstyles that chip an opponent down. The two actors seem to be well-settled into their roles as Summoner’s Rift’s celebrity spokespersons, even convincing fellow Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood to try the game out when he appeared in one episode.

Fans on the North American server have a chance of loading up against these Lord of the Rings actors playing League of Legends during their late-night Draft Queue games.
