Shanghai Dragons taunt way to victory over London Spitfire

There may be no Overwatch League moment more iconic than the Shanghai Dragon’s Jin-hyeok “DDing” Yang teabagging on the payload as it reaches its next point uncontested.

To add insult to injury, the London Spitfire lost the map featuring DDing’s taunt 0-3, and ultimately fell to the Dragons 3-2 in one of the most exciting matches of Season 2.

It was hard to not write off this matchup as an easy win for the London Spitfire, Season 1’s champion. It was even tougher after the Spitfire took the first map, Nepal, scoring 2-0 against the underdog Dragons. There was one point in the game at which the Dragons couldn’t get one percent on a control point, and many fans surely thought the match to be over early.

But commentator Matthew Morello was quick to urge viewers to throw away their biases against the Dragons, who made OWL history with the longest losing streak in the league.

“Throw away the old score,” Morello said.

The analyst called the Shanghai Dragons “basically an expansion team,” thanks to an all-new roster brought into Season 2.

The match continued back and forth, with Spitfire easily taking Anubis, followed by the Dragons dominating on Route 66. While the Spitfire were busy taking on the majority of the Dragons’ players on the map’s high ground, DDing solo carried the payload to the next point. By the time the Spitfire noticed, it was too late, and they’d already wasted multiple ultimates in a pointless tustle.

The decisive fifth game brought the two teams to Ilios, where both decided to move away from the meta. The Spitfire excited the crowd with such picks as McCree, Orisa, and Hanzo. Shanghai showed off with some devastating Widowmaker plays, with Min-seong “diem” Bae’s headshots earning him Player of the Match honors.

It all came down to the third and final point of the map. Even though the Spitfire had a nail biting 99 percent on the point, the Shanghai Dragons were eventually able to take it and secure a victory that proved they are not to be underestimated anymore.
