Riot says League of Legends World Cup event is a possibility

A brand new international tournament could be in the works according to Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent, loosely resembling a League of Legends World Cup where teams are formed by national origin.

In an interview with the French sports publication “L’Equipe” Laurent spoke about the future of League of Legends’ international tournaments. In the interview, Laurent spoke about Riot being in discussions with the International Olympics Committee about hosting an international event in France in 2024.

League of Legends World Cup a distinct possibility

Fans of League of Legends esports have been clamoring for more chances to see players from different leagues compete, with the only two consistent events throughout the year being the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship. It had already been announced that change was coming to the way that League of Legends teams competed at established international events, but Laurent specifically stated that Riot Games was open to hosting an event in which players would represent their home countries rather than the league that they play in.

This League of Legends World Cup-style event could even be tied in with the 2024 France Olympics, as Laurent said that Riot Games is in discussions with the International Olympic Committee to possibly run an event in France for 2024. This would be an incredible opportunity for League of Legends to pave the way for an official crossover between the Olympics and Riot Games, though the details of the discussions are unclear and haven’t yet come to any conclusion, one way or the other.

For now, the possibility of another international League of Legends event is something many fans have been asking for. A League of Legends world cup would put never-before-seen lineups of professional players to test their mettle on the game’s biggest stage, something sure to excite those asking for more international play.
