League of Legends opponent honor system

After many criticisms from the players, Riot finally reintroduces the long-awaited feature to increase sportsmanship. The League of Legends’ Opponent Honor system is expected to be back in the game during September 2024.

League of Legends has been a battleground for intense competition since its launch, captivating millions of players worldwide. However, with the thrill of victory often comes the frustration of defeat, leading to toxicity. The Opponent Honor system was first introduced to combat toxicity. Players were asked to reward a limited amount of opposing players for their good behavior. The system underwent significant changes since its initial release, but was eventually removed by Riot.

Recently, in a YouTube dev update, Riot announced the revival of the Opponent Honor system. With this revival, players will once again have the opportunity to honor their opponents in ways that foster positive interactions. Gladly, your honor is not limited to opponents, as teammates will be eligible to be honored as well. The dev update hinted that there will be a whole new overhaul, and details will be shared soon. This overhaul and reintroduction is slated to arrive in September 2024.

Why was the Opponent Honor system removed?

The Opponent Honor system was originally introduces to encourage sportsmanship among players in League. However, it faced challenges that eventually led to its removal. One of the most significant issue was the misuse of the system, as some players began abusing the feature. The feature was used as a form of retaliation rather than to promote positive interactions. This behavior undermined the system’s original intent and contributed to an environment ripe for toxicity.

Additionally, Riot Games observed low engagement levels with the the system, with many player simply overlooking the feature. This lack of interest led to questions regarding its effectiveness in fostering a better community. All in all, this heavily contributed to its discontinuation as Riot sought alternative ways to enhance player behavior.

The return of the Opponent Honor System underscores Riot Games’ commitment to promoting sportsmanship in League of Legends. By encouraging players to recognize and appreciate their rivals, it helps build a sense of camaraderie and understanding. For League of Legends players, the return is a welcome change, offering a renewed opportunity to recognize sportsmanship and foster a positive gaming environment.
