The cover legendaries for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have been revealed, and fans are not high on them.
The second trailer for the next generation of Pokemon games has arrived. Much like with Pokemon Sword and Shield, the starters were revealed in the first trailer, but the second trailer showed the official box art for the games. As is the tradition in the Pokemon series, two elaborately designed legendaries will be put front and center.
In this case, the games will be fronted by a pair of wacky-looking dragons. The trailer ends with the pair being revealed.
The names of the cover legendaries of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are Koraidon and Miraidon. Koraidon will represent Pokemon Scarlet while Miraidon will represent Pokemon Violet. Both have a lizard-like appearance, which is a bit of a surprise given Spain’s close association with bulls.
Cover legendaries are some of the most iconic Pokemon in each generation. Starters almost always gain the most attention, but almost all lifelong Pokemon fans can name each generation’s cover legendaries.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s X and Y legendaries are a radical departure from those seen in the recent past. Pokemon Sword and Shield went in an odd direction with Zacian and Zamazenta, who were wolves wielding weapons. Pokemon Sun and Moon had psychic-type legendaries that had attacks based on the sun and moon.
The designs of Koraidon and Miraidon are somewhat reminiscent of Pokemon Black and White’s Reshiram and Zekrom, but are arguably most similar to the Origin Formes of Palkia and Dialga from Pokemon Legends: Arceus due to their strange neck designs.
According to leaks, Koraidon will be dragon-fighting and Miraidon will be dragon-electric.
The typings for both Koraidon and Miraidon have not been officially confirmed by The Pokemon Company yet but fans should buckle in for some redundancies. According to leaks, the gen-9 legendaries will share typing with some other notable Pokemon.
Koraidon’s dragon-fighting typing overlaps with gen-7 pseudo legendary Kommo-o. This leaves the Pokemon with a long list of weaknesses including a double weakness to fairy. Miraidon shares dragon-electric typing with gen-five legendary Zekrom.
