Pokemon leak suggests potential Detective Pikachu sequel

The Pokemon franchise has been one of the most beloved video game and anime series worldwide for over two decades. Following the success of the 2019 Detective Pikachu movie, fans have long awaited news of a sequel. Recently, a major leak within the Pokémon community may have revealed clues. The leak points to a second Detective Pikachu film, titled The Great Detective Pikachu. While official confirmations are still pending, the information from the leak has sparked fresh excitement about the possibility of revisiting the world of Ryme City and its intriguing mysteries.

Hints from the Pokemon leak

In early October, a leak originating from the game developer Game Freak, responsible for the Pokemon video games, revealed various details about upcoming projects. Among these revelations was a significant hint about the Detective Pikachu sequel. According to the leaked information, the new film may be titled The Great Detective Pikachu. This would suggest that the project rumored since 2021, is still under development, despite little public acknowledgment in recent years.

The leak also indicated that the sequel has had notable directors and writers attached to it. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, best known for directing Kong: Skull Island, was rumored to be leading the project at one point. However, his busy schedule may have delayed or even shifted the focus of production. Additionally, in 2023, reports surfaced that Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of Portlandia, had entered negotiations to direct the movie, with a script written by Chris Galletta. The Detective Pikachu sequel leak appears to reflect earlier stages of development. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether Krisel or Vogt-Roberts will ultimately direct the film.

The original Detective Pikachu film, released in 2019, was met with mixed reviews but performed impressively at the box office. The movie was directed by Rob Letterman and it grossed over $450 million worldwide. This made it one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations at the time. Starring Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu and Justice Smith as Tim Goodman, the movie was praised for its engaging world-building, bringing to life a fictional universe where humans and Pokémon co-exist in Ryme City.

Despite its success, plans for the Detective Pikachu sequel stalled. Consequently, fans have been left wondering about the franchise’s future in live-action cinema. The recent leak, however, suggests that the possibility of a new movie has not been entirely abandoned.

What can we expect from the sequel of Detective Pikachu?

Though details about The Great Detective Pikachu remain scarce, there are several reasons to believe the project may still come to life. Firstly, the continuing popularity of the Pokemon franchise, both in video games and merchandise could be the motivation needed. Secondly, the release of Detective Pikachu Returns in 2023, a video game sequel that renewed interest in the character. Finally, there is an ongoing demand from fans for more content within the Detective Pikachu world.

With these factors in mind, it seems the real question is not whether the sequel will happen, but when will the right creative and production elements will fall into place.

Fans of both Pokémon and mystery films are keeping their eyes peeled for official updates on The Great Detective Pikachu, hopeful that the beloved characters will return to the big screen soon.
