London Spitfire are off to the Season 2 playoffs after defeating the Shanhai Dragons in an historic eight-game match.

The team was able to come out victorious thanks to their mastery of the new double barrier meta. Spitfire’s support main Ji-hoon “Quatermain” Song spoke with WIN.gg about how the new meta has shaken up the support role and how they came out on top of the longest Overwatch League match of all time.

Did the match go as expected today?

Quatermain: I didn’t think that it would go to the full eight maps. Other than Hanamura, we thought we’d be able to win the other maps.

When you watched Shanghai play yesterday, what were you thinking?

When I was watching the match, I was watching the DPS because I wanted to see what would happen when DDing was on stage or Diem was coming out. I didn’t think it would be easy. And no matter who lost, it’d be the end for that team.

What was the strategy going into the final map, Ilios?

We were talking about who we should focus in order to win the map.

You guys looked exhausted after the victory. What was going through your mind at that point?

I was just thinking about the game. But when we won, I couldn’t think of anything. Because it was so long, I just felt relieved.

How did you the team prepare for the Play-Ins?

We thought about our strategy going in. We were thinking about counters to their DPS, and making sure we understood our positioning. DDing is such a good Pharah, we had to prepare a lot to counter him.

What do you think of the new double barrier meta?

It’s a lot more fun than last stage. Before it was just the pull-hook strategy. But now there’s more plays you can do that aren’t as repetitive.

How has the support role changed in the new meta?

Before, in Stage 4, I was playing more Baptiste. But since the meta has changed, I have been playing more Lucio. You have to think about the speed of the game more than before. I really like it more now.

You played a lot of Lucio throughout the match. Why is Lucio good for this team comp?

When you have Reaper or other DPS on your team, having a Lucio is useful because he can do so much healing with sound barrier. It’s good when you need that extra healing.

Why is Mercy another popular hero in this current meta?

Pharah is such a prominent hero in this new meta, having a Mercy there to damage boost and have the resurrection is very helpful to make sure Pharah is supported.

Do you feel confident that your team can advance in the playoffs?

Of course! We have to have confidence to get to the grand finals.

What do you think are some of your team’s strengths in this new meta?

When we use Pharah, Doomfist, or Mei-Reaper, we’re really good with those comps That’s when we do best. I think it will continue to help us do well.
