There might be big changes coming to this year’s League of Legends World Championship as the tournament is reportedly being moved from China to Europe.

In a recent report by Upcomer, sources state that Worlds 2021 is likely to be relocated from China to Europe because of “difficulties securing travel for production crews.” Worlds was originally planned to be hosted in China for a second year in a row as a make-up for the limited crowds and underwhelming grandiosity of Worlds 2020. To make up for that, Worlds 2021 was supposed to take place across five cities in Shanghai, Qingdao, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Shenzhen.

If the recent report is true, it means that the whole event will relocate with just two months remaining until the expected start date. For the qualified teams, this means a sudden change in travel plans and a hurry to get all necessary travel documents set up for players and staff.

This is a surprising development, so LoL esports fans will likely be waiting eagerly to see how all this pans out and where the exact location will be. Until Riot makes an official statement on the matter, it will be left to speculation where the event will be hosted.

It’s possible that Riot Games will try to do something similar to Worlds 2019 which took place in cities across Europe including the LEC Studio in Berlin and the finals taking place in the Accor Hotels Arena in Paris, but this is somewhat unlikely. Current travel restrictions within Europe and overall logistical challenges will probably see the entire tournament play out in one city.

Worlds was also hosted in Europe back in 2015, where the final took place in Berlin. And of course, the very first Worlds was hosted in Jönköping, Sweden.

More information about the relocation of Worlds 2021 is expected in the very near future.
