Henry Cavill as Geralt

A recent announcement, much to the dismay of many Witcher fans, means that fans will be seeing Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, replacing Henry Cavill in season four of The Witcher.

Henry Cavill’s casting as the brooding monster hunter Geralt of Rivia was a hit among many fans, so it came as a surprise when the actor announced that he would be hanging up the silver and steel swords after the show’s third season.

Geralt won’t be played by Henry Cavill in The Witcher season four

The announcement of the casting change was made by the previous Geralt actor on Instagram, following quickly on the heels that he would be renewing his role as Superman in DC Comics’ cinematic efforts. In the Instagram post, Cavill says he sees this as a passing of the torch for Geralt, which he considers among “The greatest of literary characters”. In the post, he indicates who will be taking the mantle of the White Wolf from him, Australian actor Liam Hemsworth.

Fans will likely know the Australian actor for his relation to brother, Marvel Cinematic Universe Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, or for his performances in the Hunger Games movies as Gale Hawthorne. Cavill’s departure comes as somewhat of a surprise as the actor has been outspoken about his love for the stories being told on the Witcher’s Continent, and previously said he was committed to the show’s seven-season-long plan.

The move was confirmed by Hemsworth on his own Instagram, who posted the same image as Cavill in a post announcing his new role. Some fans are worried after an industry rumor suggested that the writing team for The Witcher weren’t fans of the original books or games. Some theorize that the creative insistence on straying from the source material was part of what pushed Cavill away from the show, but this is only speculation.

The Witcher’s third season has yet to release, so fans will get one more chance to see the Kal-El actor portray the famous monster hunter. Season three will be the last time he takes up the armor, with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill in The Witcher season four. Overall, fans seem disappointed to lose Cavill as Geralt, which was a smashing success among fans of The Witcher games and books.
