League of Legends is once again breaking containment as Riot’s flagship IP is making the jump to a card game.
After the standout success of Arcane, League’s developer is once again branching out into an entirely new medium. This time, the company is iterating on its existing card game product Legends of Runeterra to produce a physical card game for players to enjoy in person. Questions are already swirling about Project K, which appears to have already been in development for several years. Riot executive producer Chengran Chai and game director Dave Guskin have done their best to preemptively answer them with an official reveal trailer.
Here’s everything League of Legends fans need to know about the upcoming card game Project K.
Project K is a multiplayer card game meant for several players at one table, but it can also be played one-on-one.
In the trailer, the developers explain that Project K draws heavily from Legends of Runeterra, but with a multiplayer twist. The example game shows four different devs crowded around one game, each with their own deck based on a champion. In this case, the players were using Yasuo, Volibear, Jinx, and Viktor.
This design choice seems clearly inspired by the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. Each player’s champion effectively serves as their commander while the rest of the deck is built around their theme. The devs also mentioned 2v2 as a potential format, a possible mirror to MTG’s fan-made format Two-Headed Giant.
The developer did stress that Project K can be played in a more traditional two-player format.
Future fans can buy box sets of the League of Legends card game online during Teamfight Tactics Macao Open with preorders available online.
The in-person competitive event will be the only place to pick up the first box sets of the game, which will be themed around Arcane and printed in Chinese. This early event is meant to help get the word out about the game. In addition, Riot will be hosting online preorders for English box sets during or after the event.
Once the game is fully released, Riot will be working with local game stores and possibly nationwide distributors to get packs on shelves. It’s not clear exactly what regions will get the game, but the United States, Western Europe, and Asia seem like a safe bet with China already confirmed. Prices for both boxes and packs are yet to be revealed.
