Riot Games is continuing to shake up the video gaming world this week, opening the flood gates on announcements galore ahead of the Worlds 2021 finals and the release of Arcane, their flagship animated series on Netflix. After an announced collaboration with Fortnite, Riot is taking its partnership with Epic Games a step further.
Today, Epic Games announced that all of Riot Games’ titles, including League of Legends, Valorant, Teamfight Tactics, and Legends of Runeterra, will be available through the Epic Games Store.
This move is a massive change for Riot, whose games have only been available to download through its ow website for the entirety of its existence. This shift to letting competitors offer the game is a sudden change in stance from the massive developer. The enormous RiotX Arcane event ahead of its animated namesake’s release has ended up being one of the largest promotional efforts that the League of Legends has made since its tenth-anniversary extravaganza.
The move to the Epic Games Store won’t change anything about playing the games, all of which will remain free. The games will still require the use of the new Riot Games client, so even the launching process won’t change. The big change here is the expanded possible audience for Riot’s key titles.
There doesn’t appear to be much of a downside for Riot in this deal. While Epic Games may end up taking a small cut of microtransactions through their store somehow, Riot’s not hurting for cash, having already established itself as a titan in the gaming space.
All of the games are available right now through the Epic Games Store and can be expected to be there for the foreseeable future.
Riot’s moves to take over every corner of the gaming space in the first week of November seem to have been a resounding success. If you haven’t checked out Riot’s properties before now, it’s a great excuse to load one up.
