Immortals disbands Dota 2 team

A year to the day from announcing its move into Dota 2, Immortals is officially moving on from its original lineup.

On Friday, the team officially confirmed that it is parting ways with the remaining players from its Dota 2 team. The news was announced on its website.

“Immortals has opted not to extend the DOTA 2 contracts for the following players,” the statement said. “We want to sincerely thank Dubu, MP, Febby, Ryoya, and Velo for their hard work and dedication, and wish them well as they continue their Dota careers.”

Immortals is one of the largest organizations in esports, with a network of teams that includes Overwatch’s Los Angeles Valiant and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s mibr. Immortals entered the Dota 2 space last year by acquiring Team Phoenix, a squad comprised of former members of MVP Phoenix.

After a solid start for the team that included a top-four finish at PGL Open Bucharest, it began struggling to regularly qualify for Dota Pro Circuit events. Roster changes followed, but a change in fortune did not, and Immortals quietly fade from relevance in the North American scene and ultimately failed to qualify for The International 2018.

Though the announcement only came today, members of Immortals have already confirmed their departures, with some even announcing that they have joined a new team.

As for the Immortals organization, it is unclear whether it plans to return to Dota 2. There will likely be a number of independent teams looking for a sponsor across all regions, offering plenty of options should Immortals decide to remain in the game.
